The Beach, Friday Evening

The weather was still a little cloudy in the evening, but it was warm enough that hopefully people would still feel like partying. There was certainly enough food for a party, along with cool drinks and equipment for beach games like beach volleyball. Or beach dodgeball. Or beach something-else-with-balls because the residents and alumni of Fandom tended to be a creative ~~and violent~~ lot.

As the sun went down, the tiki torches came out, so there was no rush to head back indoors. It was time for an evening of fun!

"So what've you guys got planned for the summer?"

Jaime blew out a breath. "Gotta get ready to move," he answered. "Which is going to be interesting. In a good way I hope."

"What about you?"

"Move where?" Dinah asked, poking him with one foot. "Did I hear about this before?"

Jaime blinked.

"Oh. Huh. How has this not come up?" But as far as he could remember, it hadn't! "I'm moving to San Antonio for the fall." He grinned suddenly. "Dental school!"

"Dude," Dinah said, impressed. "Wow, congratulations! And yay! And... are you looking forward to this? This is all a good thing, right?"

"Yes."

"Well. I hope so." Jaime shrugged a bit helplessly. "It's a real long drive from El Paso, so I'll be a long way from family. Especially while Momoko finishes classes..."

No, Jaime didn't realize he'd practically just called Momoko family.

Dinah did, and her grin turned a little feral. "Sooo, she's finishing up this summer, though, once she has that one extra credit finished. She could always ... visit a lot?"

Move to San Antonio? Ahem?

Jaime's hand rose to rub at the back of his neck and he found himself unable to meet Dinah's eyes. "I'm, um... going to be getting a two bedroom apartment when I move to San Antonio."

"Eee!" Dinah managed to restrain herself to one bounce and one squeak. Unlike some other flag-wavers she knew, she had some self-control. "That sounds like a good plan. You know. Just in case."

He didn't quite sigh at that, but he did totally flush. Pretty darkly.

"Two bedrooms," he repeated. "But, yeah... it's still a big step." And kind of scary.

And exhilarating.

Another bounce. She kinda wanted to ask if his mom was okay with it, but that might freak him out or take the teasing too far, especially if Bianca was fine with it.

"You're ready for it," Dinah pronounced. "Seriously. What's to be worried about? Aside from running out of cereal when she visits. Or cake."

Jaime took a deep breath. "It's a big step." And not one he took lightly.

"I mean... I lived in the dorms, and I have a sister, so I'm totally used to living around girls, but..." Well, it was different when you were in love with one.

See, this is why they never, ever could have worked out. Jaime agonized over having a girl as a guest in his apartment after dating her over about three years. Dinah had been showing up in his bedroom after three months.

"You'll get used to it," she sing-songed.

"Eventually, I suppose I'll have to," Jaime admitted with a grin. "But you have to promise to try not to hit me if I act like an idiot between now and then..." It might take him a while to get used to it.

"Pffftt. I think it's a good thing I'll be in New Gotham."

No promises, Jaime!

"Hey, I'm not the only one who's going to be a bit weirded out by it!" Jaime objected.

Though he was definitely going to be way less comfortable than Momoko.

"Yes, but I'm assuming Paco and Brenda are staying in El Paso." Heeee.

"Hey!" Jaime objected, laughing in spite of himself. "I was talking about Momoko!"

"if you don't make it weird, she won't find it too weird," Dinah offered, bumping his shoulder with hers. "She'll be your guest. The only difference between staying with you and staying at your parents' place is you guys will have more time alone."

Seriously. Even if she would've pushed it further, herself.

"Until the end of the summer, sure," Jaime admitted. And that would be weird enough.

"But after she finishes classes..." Well, Momoko didn't want to stay in El Paso without him, and he didn't want her to, either, so...

At least he'd have the summer to try to get used to the idea?
