Homecoming Carnival, The Park, Friday

The weather had been kind, and it was just the right amount of cool for a Halloween-themed Homecoming carnival. The booths and activities were ready for visitors, and the Halloween decorations and spooooky music playing everywhere aimed to set the right kind of mood for everyone.

Yes, there was also black and orange glitter everywhere, because of course there was. Feel free to take some home with you, because it's going to be difficult not to!

Jon wasn't expecting to see Margo here, so stopping in front of her was more due to surprise than anything.

At least he'd have the chance to show her he'd gotten a haircut?

“Well, if it isn’t Fear Boy,” Margo said, her eye scanning that haircut. “Here to try your luck?”

"Er...not really," Jon answered. "I wasn't expecting to see you here."

“Oh, so you’re just browsing. The kissing booths.”

"I...I was really just walking past." Jon nodded. "All right, fine." A kiss. Probably on the cheek. He could do this. Margo was signed up for it, and it wasn't like she wouldn't tell him if she minded.

He dug out his wallet and took out enough money for a kiss. He frowned. "Do we know...ah, the money goes to the school. I suppose that makes sense."

“Yeah, trust me, if I was runnin’ this thing, you’d be out at least a Jackson,” Margo said, reaching for the cash first. She wasn’t stupid.

"That's the...fifty? Ah, no. The twenty." Jon shrugged and found one of those instead and handed it to her. It wasn't like he had a lot of other things to spend his money on these days.

Margo had to laugh. “Fuck, all right,” she said. She felt fond of the idiot. Briefly. Then she felt annoyed at herself for even thinking that. “Okay, any requests?”

"Er...no." Jon blinked, taken aback. "No requests. Just, um. Hold still for a moment?" He leaned in to kiss her on the cheek. And while he was there, murmured, "Thank you. For...everything, really."

“Ya know, I think part of the point is that I kiss you,” Margo said.

Ugh! Nice thoughts about Jon! Go away!

“But you’re welcome.”

"It doesn't say that," Jon pointed out. "It just says 'kissing'."

“Oh honey, that’s not totally how it works,” Margo said. “But hey. The customer is always right.”

She was in a kissing booth. Flirting came with the territory. Even with Jon.

"I've never seen one of these before," Jon admitted. "I'm wondering if they're common in American schools."

Was she flirting? If so, it was going directly over Jon's head.

Oh, Jon. Ditch the avatar of a fear entity thing and Margo would dub you adorable.

“It’s not school-specific, but sometimes,” Margo said, “Let’s not get into my sordid history.”

And Jon would have to insist that he was not, nor had he ever been, adorable.

Jon managed a small smile at that. "Deal. I made cupcakes for a school sale once, but that's as sordid as mine got."

“Seriously, how does a guy that disgustingly wholesome wind up with a fear thing in his head?”

Margo realised her error immediately and held up her hand. “Don’t answer that. I don’t care.”

"Good," Jon answered. "If it helps, the cupcakes were only because my grandmother insisted she wasn't going to be the one making them when I had signed up, and they were passable at best. I was an annoying child."

“Who grew up into an annoying adult, good job,” Margo said.

He had, hadn't he?

"At least I'm consistent."

“That ain’t always a virtue,” Margo said, shaking her head. “Did you actually let someone near your head with a pair of scissors?”

"Yes?" Jon said, looking puzzled. "Should I...That is, I didn't see a reason not to."

Margo ignored the stammering, and said, “You look less like a shaggy nerdy canine. Progress.”

"I suppose I'll take what I can get," Jon said, actually smiling a little.
