Homecoming Carnival, The Park, Friday

The weather had been kind, and it was just the right amount of cool for a Halloween-themed Homecoming carnival. The booths and activities were ready for visitors, and the Halloween decorations and spooooky music playing everywhere aimed to set the right kind of mood for everyone.

Yes, there was also black and orange glitter everywhere, because of course there was. Feel free to take some home with you, because it's going to be difficult not to!

Prompto blinked up at her, that redness creeping into his face all over again, but his brow creased with worry, because even if it was likely that Liz had come over because of the kissing booth, well...it was a kissing booth, so by nature of the thing, asking him about it wouldn't be a weird question, by definition, right? So obviously that wasn't what she could possibly be asking about! So it had to be something else, and now he was worried about what it might be, even though he had no idea where to even begin to speculate.

There was, after all, only so much overthinking even his brain could pull off.

So it was with a nervous cluelessness bred from complete denial that had him asking, eyes almost innocently wide, "What? What is it?"

“Um…did…would it be okay if I kissed you?” that was a really awkward way of asking but she finally asked and she gave a shy smile, “if you didn’t mind?”

Annnnnd now Prompto was pretty sure he was so red that he wouldn't have any freckles left after this, he'd have blushed them all off.

He miraculously managed to swallow down that lump, though.

"I mean," he croaked out. "I'm here, right?"

Which he was pretty sure was simultaniously the worst thing he could have said just then as well as a good reminder to himself that the only reason she was asking because that was the whole point of the booth.

....right?

"And, hey," he stammered, before he could stop himself, because anything he said could only make things worse, he was sure of it, "it's all for the school, too, right?"

“…right, yes of course the school,” she blinked and then got out some money because she just hadn’t forgotten the sole reason why there was a carnival. Nope. This was purely for the school and not for totally selfish reasons whatsoever.

“Um…so…” she said, with a nervous laugh as she started to lean in, “er …hi,” she managed to stammer.

At this point, Prompto had turned into such an overwhelmed ball of nervousness that he couldn't help but laugh at that hi, even if it was mostly just trying to release some of that anxiousness.

But it...actually kind of worked, a little, enough that he could sort of grin back with an (mostly failed) attempt at a smooth little "Hey" in response, and then...

...he figured if he didn't just go and do it now, he might actually chicken out somehow, so he just closed his eyes and went for it, leaning in to met Liz's lips with his own before either of them could just go and run away screaming.

Although, now that it was done, that was exactly what he fully expected her to do now.

Liz wasn’t running away, no, she stepped back slightly and there was a faint blush on her cheeks now.

“So…uh…” she tried to think of something to say and instead she bit her lip slightly, still rather nervous. “Thank you?” she tried, she wasn’t sure what she was supposed to say, it was probably not that though.

"Ummm...." Prompto had no idea what to say, either. "You're welcome?"

Probably not that either! That made him almost sound like...

"Er, I mean," he amended. "Thank you..."

That wasn't better!

"Uh, I guess...I, uh, I'll see you...at...work?"

PROMPTO. Just. Stoooooooop.

“Right…yes,” Liz realised she was still leaning in pretty close, she should really move back and not be in Prompto’s space now, “er…um…will you be going to the dance?” she paused, realised how it sounded and than added quickly, “I mean yes I’ll see you at work…though… definitely …”

Liz that really wasn’t much better either.

...ohmygods, the dance would have been so much better of a thing to have said than freakin' work! If Prompto's eyes looked like they wanted to sort of bulge out of their sockets right now, don't worry too much, that was just a side effect of him wanting to just completely die inside right now.

"Oh, yeah, the dance!" he said, nodding now. "Uhh, yeah, totally! I wouldn't....I wouldn't miss that! I mean, it's homecoming, y'know? And, like..." Why? Why couldn't he just shut his damn mouth at times like this? No, instead, he had to just keep babbling and so Liz was probably going to start wondering why she'd even let a babbling idiot like him work at her store, much less why she'd let him kiss her, even if it was for the school, "isn't homecoming supposed to be about former students and stuff coming back to celebrate? And that's, you know, that's both of us! We are homecoming!"

We are homecoming?!?

Prompto, what the fuck??

Liz had gone rather pink at mentioning the dance and she wasn’t great with social interactions at the best of times, so she was trying to act like it was a casual thing to ask and failing miserably at it.

“Yes of course, homecoming,” she said with a nervous laugh, “I …uh haven’t been to one in over ten years so I suppose mine’s well overdue, better late than never right?”

Really Liz?

"Over...ten?" Prompto almost squawked that part out, brows lifting, as that nice little nagging insecurity about his age (despite the recent birthday!) came swinging back at him with a vengeance, and he tried not to think of the fact that here he'd been to every single once since he graduated, pretty much....all of only three years ago.

He cleared his throat and hoped that this was one of the rare occasions where actually just saying something...anything at all...after that little squeak was better than just shutting up for a change.

"So, yeah, then, you've definitely gotta go! Make up for lost time, right? Uhh, and, uh, hey, you know, better late than..."

He trailed off as he realized he was about to just repeat the exact same thing she'd literally just said.

"Erm....not at all."

Yeah. Nice save, there, Argentum. That's one for the hall of fame for suuuuure.

“I definitely intend to,” she assured him with a smile, “especially now that I’m back on the islsnd, its been…my last job didn’t have much in the way of dances and parties so getting used to all of this again has been a bit of an adjustment,”

It hadn’t really helped Liz’s already quite introverted nature but she was trying … not succeeding really well but she was still trying

The smile that managed to push a little through all the blushing and internal flailing was soft and empathetic; the details might be a little different, but he definitely knew the feeling!

It also helped that this seemed like a good way to smoothly slide themselves away from all that awkwardness as he started to ask, "Oh, yeah? What was your last--"

But he stopped, cutting himself off, as the awkwardness seemed to ebb back in and he quickly shook his head. Laughed a little awkwardly. "What am I doing?" he then said. "You've got, like, a whole carnival to get out there and enjoy and here I am, keeping you here with dumb questions. I'm sure you've got a whole bunch of other people you'll want to dunk or throw pies at or...." A pause for one of those pesky throat-lumps, "kiss..."

Liz finally stepped back and smiled, “i suppose I better,” she agreed somewhat reluctantly, “but I’ll definitely see you at the dance tomorrow Uh…thank you, for the kiss I mean,”

Oh Liz …

As soon as Liz moved away, Prompto was regretting what he said, realizing how much nicer it would have been to just spend his time stuck at this booth talking with Liz rather than flailing about kisses, but that wasn't very fair, right? She should get to enjoy the carnival and everything, rather than be stuck talking to his loser butt all day...

"Yeah," he breathed out, with a sort of uncertain smile that danced on the edge of that regret. "Uh...no...no problem."
