Homecoming Carnival, The Park, Friday

The weather had been kind, and it was just the right amount of cool for a Halloween-themed Homecoming carnival. The booths and activities were ready for visitors, and the Halloween decorations and spooooky music playing everywhere aimed to set the right kind of mood for everyone.

Yes, there was also black and orange glitter everywhere, because of course there was. Feel free to take some home with you, because it's going to be difficult not to!

"In bits and pieces, which might be a good thing," Steph admitted. "I know about people from other worlds and timelines --" she was pretty sure it would blow her mind if, say, a teenage Chloe showed up here ~~although boy does her player want that~~ -- "gremlins, occasional invasions, and the weird weekends. Oh god, is there more?"

"Oh, yeah, the time travel." Miguel nodded. "It's 2100 back where I'm from. Think we've got a few people from a century or so in the opposite direction, too. I think that about covers it. Oh - buy some big clothes just in case. The weird weekends you turn into a kid, the clothes seem to adjust. The weird weekends you turn into a different gender, you're on your own."

"2100? Get the fuck out," Steph exclaimed. "It's not way too primitive for you here?"

Miguel shrugged. "I've been here a few years now. I tried to teach advanced science and get people to use it, but it didn't take, so I just deal with it. If I can't get a bunch of teenagers interested in hoverboards and 3D games, there's not much hope."

"3D games?" Steph leaned forward, her interest clearly piqued by this. "What kind of games are we talking about?"

"Holographic video games?" Miguel shrugged. "More my brother's thing than mine, but I've got a few downloaded on a set here."

"I would so be interested in seeing those." Steph looked kind of like she'd stumbled on a very large stash of gold and loot. "I studied game design. Probably way past what current hardware can do, but I kind of have to see."

"Sure." Miguel shrugged. "I can bring it somewhere if you want to take a look. Once we're done being covered in whipped cream."

"That would be fucking awesome." Steph spun around on her chair a little bit and pumped a fist. "Hey, what other stuff does the school teach?"

Since, you know, that didn't sound like the standard curriculum most places.

"Whatever people feel like teaching," Miguel said. "It's not exactly a typical school. I think one guy teaches napping."

"Napping?" Steph's snort-laugh wasn't even a little bit dignified and she didn't care at all. "Holy shit, it's like the anti-Blackwell."

"If Blackwell's a stuffy traditional school, then yeah," Miguel says. "I think this semester there's a 'badass bitch' class, a cupcake class, a superhero class, a teambuilding class...Oh, and literature and math. And one that's got a lot of huge birds; I'm not sure what they're teaching. Teachers and kids are from all over the multiverse, so we really do get all kinds."

"I think it got stuffier after I left," Steph said thoughtfully, "and they turned it into a specialized arts school for seniors ~~because whee retconning~~. I definitely can't see Blackwell having a badass bitch class, but I so would have taken that."

A beat.

"Wait. Huge birds?"

Miguel was grinning at her approval of the badass bitch class.

He shrugged. "Never seen them myself. Apparently they keep showing up in the class. Sometimes the Danger Shop is fussy. It's a holographic classroom, good for working with dangerous things, but it's a computer, so there's sometimes no predicting it."

"Holographic classroom." Steph was just going to keep repeating things today. "How the fuck is this place real?"

It was worth noting that she said this with a whole lot of delight piled on top of the disbelief.

"Multiversal hub." Miguel shrugged. "I try not to ask about the 'how' too much. Not that I'm good at it, but I try. Sign up to teach something, you'll get to use it. I'd say drop by a class, but I'm not teaching right now. The guys with the huge birds might not mind, though. Go back and listen to radio, you should be able to figure out when it is."

"I think I will." Steph's smile was juuuuust a bit devious. "Just to make my bird nerd friend lose his mind."

"Bird nerd friend?" Miguel asked.

"Colorado park ranger, but he's also just a huge nerd about nature in general," Steph explained. There wasn't any mockery in the way she said that, just a sort of takes one to know one tone. "Reigning Haven Springs Birder of the Year for at least several years running. Birds from other worlds? I don't even know what he'd do with that revelation but now I think I need to find out."

Miguel laughed. "Pity he's not a marine biologist. You could show him Sidon." He looked around and pointed at Sidon, in case she hadn't met him yet.

She had not, as evidenced by the wide-eyed look.

"They... go to school here? Used to?"

"He used to go here, now he teaches," Miguel said. "He's one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet, if you can handle a lot of enthusiasm about pretty much everything."

Sidon was a lot, okay? He wouldn't give you the shirt off his back (if he had one), he'd harvest the fiber, make the fabric, and tailor you one. While smiling.

... and Steph thought the folks in Haven Springs had been nice. She might need a couple more weeks to settle in here before meeting Sidon.

"You get a lot of students coming back to teach weird-ass classes?"

Miguel thought about it. "Not all of them, but a few, yeah. I think the dean used to go here, too. If it's the kind of place you like, there are plenty of reasons to stay."

"That's..." Steph actually had to think about it for a second; she still had a little trouble wrapping her brain around the concept of staying in any one place for too long, but she was slightly more willing to entertain the idea than she might have been a couple of years ago. "Pretty damn unique, I have to say."
