Homecoming Carnival, The Park, Friday

The weather had been kind, and it was just the right amount of cool for a Halloween-themed Homecoming carnival. The booths and activities were ready for visitors, and the Halloween decorations and spooooky music playing everywhere aimed to set the right kind of mood for everyone.

Yes, there was also black and orange glitter everywhere, because of course there was. Feel free to take some home with you, because it's going to be difficult not to!

"This is basically a country fair," Eliot said, shaking his head.

Jon looked around and shrugged. "I'll take your word for it. I have no idea what a country fair is like."

"It's like this," Eliot said, the 'you idiot' going unspoken, "only it smells like literal shit."

"If you say so," Jon agreed. "It sounds unpleasant."

"Well, some people do choose to live in the country for non-agrarian reasons," Jon said. Like being in hiding. "I like some cows," he confessed, "although mostly from a distance. I wouldn't want to own any. Or smell them too often. But there are worse fates."

Eliot shuddered theatrically (to mask the real shudder underneath).

"Are there? Are there really?"

"Being tracked down and brutally murdered by Hunters," Jon explained. "That...probably would have been worse." Although it might have stopped the apocalypse, so... he sighed. "For me, anyway."

"Ugh, fine. If you want to be literal about it," Eliot scoffed. "I suppose dying horribly would be slightly worse than being on a . . ." He gagged. "On a -- farm --"

Look. He couldn't not be melodramatic about his youth as a farm boy, okay? It wasn't in him. Even when he'd been using it to save his kingdom from famine at the start of his reign.

...and Jon knew that that was based on experience. Well, then.

He smiled at the dramatics. "Well, when you put it like that, it does seem rather unappetising. Hooray for cities."

"God yes," Eliot said with feeling. He raised his flask. "Cities and culture and indoor plumbing. Here here."

"And decent wifi and less stigma for being queer," Jon added, toasting back with his cigarette.
