Community Center, Friday Evening

Fandom's reunions tended not to start off too splashy. There was time to get outrageously drunk, sleep with someone, and then start shenanigans in the morning - you didn't need shenanigans at your opening reunion night party, right?

No, the community center had been tastefully decorated to Fandom party standards: with so much colored glitter that it felt like every time someone moved, they kicked up a small glitter storm. There were artfully crafted yet gaudy squirrel statues everywhere. Fosse lurked in a corner.

And the beverages were many, including a punch thoughtfully pre-spiked.

She laughed. "I'm not sure Marc was terribly impressed with my tea, but that's good to know."

"He liked it fine," Steven assured her. Which for Marc was an enthusiastic endorsement, really. "I liked it as well and I'm the expert anyway, aren't I?"

"Certainly more than Marc," she agreed. "So I guess that's a good thing."

Steven waved it off. "Don't let him worry you. He likes a lot of things without saying so. It's how he is. He's more actions than words."

After all, Steven had learned that lesson about Marc the hard way.

"He's also kind enough to not say he doesn't like something I made," Nell said with a smile. "He doesn't worry me. I think he's great just the way he is."

She felt like she'd always know where she stood with Marc.

"Well I certainly agree," Steven said, giving her something of a bow. "Bit of an exclusive club but worth the entrance fee, I think. Suppose it's not so much something you pay as an obstacle course but still. Worth it."

Nell laughed. "It's nice talking to someone so straighforward. So far no obstacle course for me, once I figured out what he was doing in the shop that first time."

"Hmm, yeah, but that's more the real him, isn't it?" Steven pointed out. "Caring about people. Wanting to make sure they're all right. He pretends it isn't but it's his way."

It was exactly the way for someone who'd been hurt too many times to take a chance. But she didn't want to say that to Steven. She was rather protective of him as well.

"It is," Nell agreed. "He's very caring, but would prefer people not know that."

Steven appreciated that Nell understood Marc so well. Even if he couldn't read her thoughts, her words proved it all the same. "He thinks pushing people away is caring, is the problem. Trying to teach him it isn't so. Bloody hard to push me away, after all."

"M'pretty stubborn," she said with a smile. "And awful hard to get rid of."

"Good," Steven told her. He gave her a smile. "He needs that. It's why I like you. Well one reason, anyway. Besides the tea."

Nell laughed again. "We'll always have tea and Marc to bond over."
