The Beach, Monday afternoon

After classes were over (or roughly, it wasn't like he kept track like some kind of creeper), he put on his favorite Hawaiian shirt from the Shenanigans--the Hot Dog Bigfoots--and headed down to the beach.

In a little while, there were four fires roaring merrily: three on different grills with a variety of meats, one sequestered just for pork products, and one for vegetarian options. Steve'd even sourced some fresh ahi again and was feeling particularly pleased with himself about that.

The fourth fire was a cute little bonfire with neatly stacked rejected Shenanigan shirts placed a safe distance from it, along with buckets of water and sand for fire safety (and because McGarrett had 100 percent been a Boy Scout).

There were coolers of drinks including one of beer with a sign--"If you are from the HS and take a beer at a cop party, you're dumber than we thought and are v sad for you"--as the only disincentive.

Come on down, Fandom! Say goodbye to the summer. Eat food, drink beer, get rid of polyblend if that's your thing...

"Sounds like him," Watts said with a nod. "I mentioned I would often eat a pretzel or two as dinner while on the job and he was concerned that I was not getting enough protein. Or vegetables."

"Now I like him even more," Steven said. "Because he's right. Hopefully you're doing better these days?"

Possibly with Steven's direct intervention, given how often they ate together.

"Well, fewer active crime scenes taking up time I could be spending sitting down to a proper meal," Watts pointed out. "Also," he added, "Excellent company for a number of those meals, which is an incentive on its own."

"Funny thing," Steven said. "I've had excellent company for a number of my meals as well. Strange how that works out, isn't it?"

"My, you're right, there does seem to be a degree of synchronicity there," Watts said. "How fortuitous."

Speaking of meals had together, "I thought last night went well, didn't it?"

Steven was still second guessing himself in general after the past week. But it seemed like things went all right.

"It did," Watts said, and here's where he would normally be offering at least a kiss on the cheek- in fact he'd started forward to do just that, before stopping abruptly. He ended up clasping Steven's hand in his own for a moment instead. "The meal was delicious, the company enjoyable, and the moving picture very entertaining."

Steven gave a quick smile to show he understood about the lack of kiss and appreciated the hand clasp in its place. "Good. I think it went better. Still hate there's nothing we can do about it but at least she had a nice evening? Good memory to take with her?"

Steven understood about wanting to hold on to memories at least.

"A very good memory," Watts assured him. "One I'm sure she'll hold on to."

"I'm glad you were there as well," Steven said. "And that you enjoyed the film. Knew we'd get there eventually."

Arguably thanks to the presence of a chaperone, but still.

"It was quite unlike anything I'd seen before," which wasn't all that hard since he could count the number of films he'd seen on one hand, but. Not the point.

"It is special," Steven assured him. "Loads of films out there, doesn't always mean they're any good or important. But I'm glad you liked it. Means we can try it again sometime."

Possibly making it to seeing the movie again. Maybe it would help if they ordered pizza, especially now that they knew someone who sold it.

"Oh, I'm counting on it," Watts told him, bumping their shoulders together briefly.

Steven took a risk and bumped his shoulder back. "Have you eaten anything yet?"

Speaking of making sure Llewellyn fed himself properly.

"As it happens, no, but I was just about to head over and take a look at what was on offer," Watts admitted.

"Don't hold back on my account," Steven said, which was his way of warning that the vegan options were not many. "Have whatever you like."

"Mmm, processed meat and I are not exactly on the best of terms," Watts confessed. "I think I will stick to those items I can be sure will not end in a case of botulism." So... like... maybe the pizza. Though not that hot-dog-containing monstrosity.

"The veggie burgers are good," Steven pointed out. "If you're in a mood to try them."

"I'm always in the mood to try something new," Watts reminded Steven. When it came to food especially.

"Give those a go then," Steven said. "Should be all right. It is nice how they've things all separated. Maybe there's more in town who need it?"

Steven doubted he was the only person in town who avoided meat at the very least, but so far he was the only one he knew of.

“Even with as small a population as the island has, statistically there must be at least a few who keep vegetarian,” Watts mused.

"Moving the pork to the side as well," Steven pointed out. Reminded, he added, "Did I tell you my teacher is Jewish as well? She's very nice. Talked about doing things for the holidays but I wasn't sure if she meant here or back home. Still, very kind of her."

Kind of her to bring it up at all, Steven meant. He wasn't assuming he'd been given an invitation, especially if it was on her home world.

"You hadn't," Watts confirmed. "The holidays- oh! Oh. Those are- soon, aren't they?"

"She was thinking more December but yes, that as well," Steven said. "Later in the month, actually."

Yeah, the imminent ones were actually the holidays Watts was somewhat more familiar with. For an extremely loose value of 'familiar', but. "Well. It would be nice," he agreed. "If there was- something here."
