Parents Weekend Brunch - Sunday morning in the park

Harvey didn't have too much trouble arranging the brunch in the park. Between the help of the rest of the StuCo members and oddly enough, Marshall (apparently he had a thing for brunch), Harvey hardly had to do a thing. And isn't that what being president is really about?

There was a harvest theme in the tent, with the tablecloths and napkins all in reds, yellows and oranges. Marshall even hand-made the autumn-themed centerpieces on the tables. There was also, of course, every kind of brunch food imaginable set up at the buffet table. There was probably even foods there that didn't even qualify as brunch. Harvey had a hankering for pizza earlier.

A sign was posted outside the tent:

That made him snicker and grin more. "Sure am."

"And what about that company you met last night?" he asked, so innocently.

BA seemed to be in a good mood, no way was he going to give up the chance to tease him.

BA grumbled and cut into his toast.

"She was a classy lady. A fella doesn't talk about it."

"Sure, BA."

He focused back on his breakfast, but a few snickers still escaped every once in a while.

BA dropped his knife with a clatter. "Dammit, you crazy fool. You ain't gonna drop this, are ya?"

"What?" he asked. "You met a lady, I just wanna know about her. Ain't no different than you wonderin' about Abby Irene."

"That's what friends do, you know."

BA shrugged. "Not like I ever gonna see her again," he said. "She was nice. Tough."

"How do you know? Maybe if you come back to visit, you'll run into her."

"She was visiting too," BA said. "Seems like it'd be pretty unlikely we'll meet again."

"Oh." He did have a point there. "Sorry, big guy. If they ever have another visitors' weekend, I'll let you know. Maybe she'll turn up again."

BA nodded. "Thanks. Though I dunno if I'd want Hannibal and Face finding out. She kinda..." He gestured at his forehead.

Now he looked a bit confused. "She kinda what? Had spikes or somethin' on her forehead? Big huge ridges?"

"She wasn't a robot was she?"

What? It was possible here.

"Ridges," BA said. "Damnedest thing."

He grinned a little. "Sounds a bit like a student I had this summer. Big kinda fella, surely attitude. Bumpy forehead."

"Reminded me of you," he smirked. "Minus the forehead."

"Huh," BA said. "I wonder if that was who she was visitin'."

"I have no idea," he shrugged. "I ain't had no one come by and ask about any of the students. I did get a student who came by. Wonder if his dad ever made it out or not," he remarked more to himself than BA.

BA shrugged. "Not like it makes no difference."

He frowned at BA. "Whadda mean by that?"

"As in, doesn't make a difference who she was visitin', fool," BA said.

"Oh, that. I was thinkin' about somebody else."

"What were you thinkin' about?" BA asked.

He wondered what the best way was to put it. "A student of mine. Name's Jack. He came by my office yesterday, askin' if I'd seen his dad around and I hadn't."

"I told him maybe he'd show up before the end of the weekend, but I dunno. I kinda got the impression kid misses his dad, you know?"

And having him think Murdock was his dad that other weekend probably hadn't helped much. But he wasn't going to tell BA that part.

"Poor kid," BA said. "Never good when a kid misses his daddy."

"Man, some of the things I could tell you 'bout some of these kids," he frowned and shook his head. "'Bout nearly as bad as anything we saw in 'Nam."

BA frowned. "No kid ought to go through things like that."

"I know, brother. Some of 'em soldiers, even seen action already. Ain't much you can do about 'cept to let 'em be kids while they're here, you know?"

Sometimes, the teaching gig wasn't as great as he would've liked.
