Parents Weekend Brunch - Sunday morning in the park

Harvey didn't have too much trouble arranging the brunch in the park. Between the help of the rest of the StuCo members and oddly enough, Marshall (apparently he had a thing for brunch), Harvey hardly had to do a thing. And isn't that what being president is really about?

There was a harvest theme in the tent, with the tablecloths and napkins all in reds, yellows and oranges. Marshall even hand-made the autumn-themed centerpieces on the tables. There was also, of course, every kind of brunch food imaginable set up at the buffet table. There was probably even foods there that didn't even qualify as brunch. Harvey had a hankering for pizza earlier.

A sign was posted outside the tent:

Amber shrugged a shoulder. "Fine, I guess."

He raised an eyebrow.

"You seem..."

He wobbled a hand.

"Is something the matter?"

"Just a little thinky, Liir. Don't trouble your mind over me," she told him, giving him a slight grin.

"Fair enough. I do it myself."

He offered an arm.

"I just didn't want you to think I wasn't paying attention."

She moved in against him at his offer. "You really pay attention to me?"

He gave her a faint squeeze.

"Of course. Paying attention is, well, it's necessary."

"Necessary for what?" she asked.

"It's the most important part of... of being friends. Caring about someone. If you can't even give someone your attention, what's that say?"

It's the most important to him because he'd never gotten it except in a negative light. And even then, he'd never hated Manek because the other boy had at least cared enough to torment him.

"I've been somewhat neglectful of you this weekend," she said, his words cutting her slightly, undoubtedly unintentionally on his part. "But I know you've been busy too, with him."

He blinked.

"You haven't been neglectful. Your mother's been here."

He looked around for a moment.

"Did Trism bother you? He's... well, he's from my world, and he's got some rather, well, different ideas than someone here might have."

"No, he didn't. He's was very pleasant."

A beat.

"Are you two... like a thing now?"

He actually startled.

"A thing? I'm... we're not dating, if that's what you're asking. We're very close friends, but we've never... no," and he swallowed, "no, we're not-- no."

"It kind of sounds like you are," she said. "Didn't radio mention him being all over you or something or other?"

He looked up.

"He holds me a lot. Touches me, takes my hand, curls up with me. He knows I feel better for it, and he knows that I don't get it normally. That's all. We kiss, but..."

He shrugged.

"So have you and I. And Toby and I. And Ronan and I. It's a kiss."

Amber stared up at him. It shouldn't concern her...

...

Wait. Toby?

"Toby?"

"He came to the kissing booth. As did Ronan. As did Helen, if you'd really like to know."

Now he's looking at Amber, rather confused.

"Oh."

She turned beat red and looked away.

This stupid jealousy feeling just had to quit. It wasn't fair!

"Sorry."

"Is that wrong?"

He... really didn't know. There were plenty of books that explained how to be in a relationship, and he'd read them, but he couldn't find one that just explained how you're supposed to be with people in general.

She cringed. "No, Liir, it's not wrong. You're single. Kiss as many people as you want. I'm sorry if I made you feel otherwise by my nosiness."

"Well, it's not all right if it upset you," he said as he leaned down to peer at her carefully.

"It's not my place to be upset," she mumbled, her look sheepish.

He was quiet for a moment.

"That depends on why you're upset."

"I know it," she nearly whispered, not meeting his eyes. She was ashamed of herself.

"And you would think less of me for my thoughts."

He shook his head.

"I'll never think less of you," he told her, honest in his intentions even if it was a bit untrue without the last part, "at least, not for a feeling. A reaction."

"Yes you would," she nodded. She was ashamed of herself. Cal would be...

Well, she really wondered if he would care too much about her thoughts. Hard to tell, really.

"Just... kissing is kissing, right?"
