Karla's surprise birthday party, the beach, Wednesday afternoon

The weather was great--- and no other random horses showed up on the way there for Dinah, at least. There was a grill for burgers and brats and some skewers of meat, a big cooler full of drinks, and a couple bags of chips. Plus a cake. Big cake.

Time to get ready for Karla's (mostly!) Sweet Sixteen Surprise Party.

There were lawn chairs set up, and blankets out to sit on, and a few beach umbrellas too.

Dinah was working the grill. Fear, people.

Angela didn't know Karla that well. But a passing acquaintance was more than enough reason to get out here and celebrate with her, she thought.

Besides. Parties were a great distraction from that ever present 'graduation' thing and inevitabilities that reminded her of that she was hoping to avoid. It was making it more difficult than usual to relax and just enjoy things.

But she was trying! See her out here lounging on a lawn chair with a drink trying.

Jonas was still a little awkward at parties but he was definitely there because he wouldn't miss a party for Karla. He'd found a lawn chair under a beach umbrella and was busy digging his feet into the sand idly.

Bobby was fully into this lounging thing, especially since come a couple more months from now, it'd be too hot to properly enjoy it (well, for him anyway, the weirdo).

After a visit home, Alex tended to come back grumpy and ready to punch people. This time, he came back feeling pretty decent and a lot less angry than usual. Visits home seemed to be easier when he had someone with him that could easily distract him from his array of issues. And he'd had fun showing off the more interesting spots in Iowa.

He'd gotten back a few hours ago and had time to shower and sleep a bit before coming down to Karla's party. Well, he thought Karla would wanna see him. Or something. Maybe he just wanted to be a pain. But, a fun pain with a drink and a nice spot lounging on the sand.

Jack took off his shoes and rolled up his trouser legs when he got to the beach, wanting to play in the water.

The horse who appeared under him as he waded into the surf added an interesting touch to the whole experience.

Hayley wandered out to the party, big smile on her face.

This was a gorgeous place for a party. She definitely hoped it was a special one for Karla.

Emma, of course, was wearing a swimsuit and sarong, as was fitting a beach party, and lounging on the sand with a nice drink. Maybe she'd ask Karla for some of that fantastic wine later, and see how much trouble they could get in.

Kennedy was never going to turn down a party, and with two in one day she was sort of taking it as a challenge. Her and her appetite.

Also a swimsuit and a blanket to sprawl on, 'cause hey. Why not go all out for summer break?

Gabrielle's planned trip home had been postponed for a few days because of this; she could hardly miss out on her roommate's birthday. She helped herself to a little bit of everything off the grill and a few veggies on the side and plunked down cheerfully in the sand, unmindful of any sand that might get in unmentionable places.

Pfft. You people and your blankets and your silly modern comforts.

Yeah, you didn't skip out on the birthday party of someone who'd done so much for you. Not a chance, and Tahiri had a grilled rib of some kind in her hand as she wandered up and down the beach, flightsuit pant legs rolled up to the knee so she could wade in the water.

Katchoo . . . had skipped out of work a little early for this. She wouldn't exactly call Karla a friend, not quite, but Francine would, and on her own part she'd concede to a painful, awkward sort of let's-not-really-talk-about-this common ground that justified being here.

Off to the side, of course, not really hanging out, but . . . hey. Here. It counted.

Being a redhead, he was sunblocked to Tatooine and back, but he was not going to miss Karla's birthday.

Chloe didn't usually go to parties -- and rarely got invited -- but she had seen Karla in the Reserves and thought that she should at least sneak in to leave a present before trying to sneak back out again.

Besides, no one shouldn't get lots of presents on their sixteenth birthday.

Ino kidnapped a blanket off to the side and settled in on it with a vaguely defiant air. There, she was here. Victory over... herself. Shush.

And trying really hard to feel like that was a truly happy thing instead of something she'd had to talk herself around into doing. As the party went on she was more successful--Ino was like that, parties were fun and fun was infectious.

Warren didn't exactly have much in the way of plans for his own birthday, today. Which meant that, beyond the fact that he was just happy that Karla was getting a party of her own, he was kind of thrilled that there was a party to go to in the first place.

There was no way he was missing out on the birthday party of a flying buddy.

Or missing out on a burger. Burgers were kind of awesome.

She could already tell that today would be a long day--Hinata was not the most social of creatures and two parties was going to be, well, an ordeal--but she couldn't bring herself to miss either one of them.

Raising a hand to block the sun from her eyes, Hinata considered the water.

It surely could not be warm enough to swim in already, could it?

Tara didn't talk to Karla all that often, but she wasn't missing a party for a sister witch. She was, however, a little nervous in the crowd, so she retreated by the food and concentrated on a handful of chips.

Dinah's best flimsy excuse to get Karla to the beach had been something along the lines of 'new power demonstration, *so cool*,' and not a mention of her birthday at all.

Yeah, that excuse was going to hold up for maybe two minutes.

Flimsy excuse, yes, but Karla really hadn't been expecting anything, since graduation was this weekend and she figured everybody was going to be focused on that and Warren's party tonight. And she still hadn't seen the Canary Cry and after their conversation at 'Dite's...well, it all made sense in her head, okay?

Dinah kept her laughing all the way to the beach, so she wasn't really paying attention to where they were going. Until they got there. And Karla saw everyone.

...She might have wibbled, but she'd thank you not to mention it.
