Parents' Weekend Brunch, Sunday Morning to Afternoon, The Park

As was traditional, the start of the end of Parents' Weekend featured plenty of food, benches, chairs, and coffee in the park. After all, the Student Council couldn't let the parents be weirded out one last time without a feast.

The sky was a little overcast, but the temperatures were still above normal, which was a lucky break for the final day of the weekend.

Sam wasn't that hungry so he'd let Frank and Ramon go off to completely wipe the school of food. He'd taken a seat at an empty table and gotten himself settled there.

Occasionally, he glanced around, trying to spot certain people but his eyes always came back to the table and his thoughts.

"So how's your weekend going?" Annie asked, wandering over.

"I think -- " Sam paused, looking thoughtful. "Well, no one's died or gotten into a fight. So, I think we're doing okay. What about you? Good weekend? Any guests?"

"No guests," she said, taking a seat. "Well, there's the guy who's freaking me out, but he's not here for me or anything." At least she was keeping the longing looks to a minimum. "Who's here for you?"

Sam glanced towards the food table and pointed out Frank and Ramon. One was stuffing his face with food and the other just looked appalled.

"Two of my friends from back home," he said, half smiling. "Frank and Ramon. They're pretty fond of the free food. They've got plenty of money to get food back home but I guess free makes it better."

"It probably helps that it's good free food, too," Annie decided. "It's nice that you got to see them."

"Yeah, they're pains in my ass but they're the good kind," Sam agreed with another quick smile. "Which guy's freaking you out? He scary or something?"

"No," she said quickly. "That guy Rhodey? I don't know who he's here for. He looks just like someone I know back home."

"Oooh, that kind of scary," Sam said, nodding knowingly. "Have you talked to him? He looks like a decent guy, at least. Doesn't have the 'gonna take over the world' vibe about him. That's always good."

"Yeah... Um, I kind of had to do an act with him at the recital last night," Annie admitted.

"I missed that," Sam said apologetically. "It's not really Ramon or Frank's thing so we kind of just hung out in my room and listened to music. Like old times."

It'd been a really nice time, actually. "What kind of act? Come on, come on, tell me."

Annie bit her lip. "Interpretive dance to the balcony scene from the meta for Romeo and Juliet?"

"Oh, wow," Sam said, eyes widening a touch. "How'd...how did you and he decide on that? That's pretty damn creative."

"So have there been a whole load more Seattle's for the weekend?" Kate asked, breaking into whatever daydream he'd slipped into.

"How many friends do you think I have?" Sam asked, glancing up at her. "You make it sound like I'm some big man on campus."

"You might have a herd of siblings," she pointed out. "How would I know?" As far as she could remember he hadn't shared on the subject.

"Only child," he said shortly. That was a slightly sore subject considering his dad had gone off and gotten himself a new family where he did have some half siblings. "Two of my friends came east for the weekend. Ramon and Frank. Closest I've got to siblings."

"The Ramon who eats the weird things." Or possibly just the lots of things. She was fuzzy on the exact details of that conversation much like her mun.

"Probably better than siblings," she decided. "Popular opinion is friends are less annoying."

"Anyone show up to see you?" Sam asked, letting his lack of correction about Ramon be his answer. "Any Georgia Peaches on the island today?"

Kate exhaled a wry laugh. "You can call him that if you want." It would be funny to see.

"Him?" Sam asked, raising an eyebrow. "Dad? Uncle? Grandfather?"

"Guardian," Kate corrected. "Closest I've got." Families, always always a sore spot for some reason. In her case, because she didn't have one anymore.

"But you wouldn't have wanted to call my dad a Georgia Peach to his face either."

"Guardian," Sam said, nodding. "How's he like the place? Impressed with the massive amounts of free food around? That's what my friends like the best, I think."

Kate's mouth twisted. "I think he's way too busy thinking of reasons I should be elsewhere to concentrate on the food." Greg had a bit of a one-track-mind sometimes. When it came to this particular subject especially.

"Is that why yours have decided to leave you to stare out the table over here?" Brunch called?

"They didn't leave me," Sam said, shaking his head. "They wanted to eat, I'm not that hungry thus they are at the food table and I am here."

Sam shrugged like he'd just solved some big mystery. "I'm sure they'll come back over here soon enough. Why, wanna meet them and gossip with them about me?"
