Glitter encrusted moosen stood guard in the entry to the transformed Town Hall, reminding all those in attendance that the night was about all things Canadian. Or things the Student Council had deemed Canadian - plus a whole lot of glitter.

Sparkly red maple leaves and paper geese hung from irridescent streamers, setting off the food tables as very much separate from the raised dance floor in case the terrifying papier-mâché beaver didn't make it obvious that the timbits were for eating. Or for dunking in the maple syrup fountain. Beyond pure sugar, there were plenty of bite-size portioned food and nonalcoholic beverages to push the theme into the bellies of all, no matter how tight the dresses!

Beyond the dance floor, the shadowy corners glowed with the twinkle of glittery maple leaf garland and a Joni Mitchell inspired moose that had been strategically positioned to look rather tragic in its lyric-covered glory. Yes, glory. For the evening was to be glorious. Or at the very least entertaining.

"When I was a youngling, Master Vandar thought that my ability to form connections with people was my road to being able to use the Living Force better, so it probably all ties together," Zayne mused.

"That does make sense, when you think about it," she realized, totally thinking about it now.

"And part of the reason I never really grew into my abilities at a normal pace is because my Masters believed exclusively in the Unifying Force to a psychotic degree," Zayne said.

"I've had a lot of time to think about these things over the past year."

Jaina tilted her head, suddenly really interested. "You think their philosophy held you back?" she asked.

"It's part of my 'learning disability' with the Force. I was only ever going to really explore my connection if I came at it the right way. But nobody had seen someone like me before, so they didn't know what the right way was," Zayne said. "Lucien's view of the Force was completely wrong for me. It wasn't until I started doing it my way and using what Gryph taught me that I started to figure it out."

"So you think the correct view of the Force depends on the person?" she asked. It wasn't so much that she was interested in philosophy, but she didn't so much like that Jacen had the same view as Lucien.

"I don't think there's really a 'correct' view of it as long as you're not using it for dark reasons or something," Zayne said. "But I'm proof that people are connected to it in different ways. And sometimes you can only get to that connection from a certain direction."

"Hm," she said, having something new to think about. "Thanks for that."

"You're welcome," Zayne said. "Especially since that means it sounds like I know what I'm talking about. I'm kind of a special tutor for the Council if they spot other kids with Force disabilities like I have. I haven't been called up to help yet, but it's nice to know that I can at least explain the way I see things."

"That's really good," Jaina said, really meaning that. "For the kids, and for the Council to know that they might not know everything for every person."

"They learned that the hard way," Zayne said. "And with the Revanchist movement taking so many Jedi, they need to replenish the ranks of Jedi loyal to the Council, so they need some of the kids who are progressing a little slow."

"I'm glad I can help, but I'm even more glad that I don't have to be concerned about the politics of all that anymore."

"Yeah, I try to avoid the political stuff as much as possible. Much easier to leave that to the ones better equipped for it while I use my lightsaber a lot," she reasoned.

"You still have that on me," Zayne said. "You know, I've dueled four Jedi Masters, two Sith acolytes, and one just plain psychotic Force user in the past year, and didn't actually beat any of them?"

And yet he was the one who was still alive. Well, Lucien too, but he didn't know that.

"...The Force really is on your side," Jaina said, impressed he was still alive.

"I have a habit of getting last second saves. Sometimes it's even kind of planned," Zayne said.

"Planned how?" she asked.

"When we took the fight to the Covenant's base, I actually got Lucien back on my side to set a trap for Haazen, the guy behind the whole thing," Zayne explained. He left out the part where he barely managed to fight Lucien to a standstill after a long battle, and even then it was only with the help of convenient munitions. "I was able to trick Haazen into letting me past his defenses and took away some of his best Sith artifacts, so he started electrocuting me."

"Lucien actually got me to safety and sacrificed himself to stop Haazen, too. So, kind of planned. As long as I was able to trust a guy who'd spent the past few months trying to murder me."

"That's actually not that uncommon a situation," Jaina said helpfully.

Once again, her life was not like most people's.

"I know. It's something I've had to count on a few times," Zayne said. "They don't usually realize I'm counting on them, though."
