Homecoming Dance | Town Hall | Saturday Evening | Post I

Glitter encrusted moosen stood guard in the entry to the transformed Town Hall, reminding all those in attendance that the night was about all things Canadian. Or things the Student Council had deemed Canadian - plus a whole lot of glitter.

Sparkly red maple leaves and paper geese hung from irridescent streamers, setting off the food tables as very much separate from the raised dance floor in case the terrifying papier-mâché beaver didn't make it obvious that the timbits were for eating. Or for dunking in the maple syrup fountain. Beyond pure sugar, there were plenty of bite-size portioned food and nonalcoholic beverages to push the theme into the bellies of all, no matter how tight the dresses!

Beyond the dance floor, the shadowy corners glowed with the twinkle of glittery maple leaf garland and a Joni Mitchell inspired moose that had been strategically positioned to look rather tragic in its lyric-covered glory. Yes, glory. For the evening was to be glorious. Or at the very least entertaining.

Welcome to your 2011 Homecoming Dance!

//The sort where apparently I'm at least partially responsible for the education of young mutants who aren't completely comfortable with their powers, yet,// Jono replied with a shrug. //Just as a TA, granted, but...//

At least he wasn't throwing himself around in tights anymore.

Emma was just going to point at him and grin evilly. "Do you need my human development textbooks, Mr. Starsmore?"

//I think th'last thing any of those students is ever going to want to see is me with a textbook in my hand,// Jono noted, raising an eyebrow. //I might get ideas or start thinking or something.//

Thinking! It was bad enough he already did things like shove novels at them to read for the sake of reading!

//... Do you have any good ones?//

There was a reason he'd held down a position in the library here for most of his time as a student.

"You can have my stuff from Mason's class, once it's over," she promised. "I was just going to sell them back anyway. I don't want any reminders of her class."

//... That sounds foreboding.//

See, Jono was very observant. When he wanted to be.

//This is part of that not so wonderful week you'd mentioned, I'm assuming?//

"She's a racist," Emma said bluntly. "She doesn't think mutant kids belong in schools with 'normal' children, and she won't allow us to debate it in class." Or ever.

"Having the texts from her class used with and for mutant kids would give me great glee and jubilation."

Jono couldn't help but wince a little at that.

Ah. It was starting to catch up with her, then.

//The moment you don't need them, let me know,// he replied, nodding. //I'll make sure they find a good home in one of our classrooms.//

Not that Xavier couldn't afford to supply his students with textbooks. But this was more a matter of principle, and Jono was of the firm opinion that one could never have access to too many books.

These kids clearly needed Jono in their lives, since Emma didn't trust any of Xavier's people to be good influences. The man had practically outed mutants, for goodness-sake.

"Then you shall have first pick of any book I have," she decided. "Want to come out at the end of the semester, and we can raid the bookstore 'free' pile?"

Honestly. And for all that he spoke about peace between mutants and humans, following up those words by putting kids into masks and having them run around showing off how well-trained they were as super-powered fighters was probably not the greatest way to go about it. And that was the opinion of Jono, who wasn't wearing his belt with the X on it tonight mostly on principle.

//I would be an idiot to refuse,// he noted, nodding. //How long is that for you? My own timeline seems to be on fastforward these days, so it might take a bit of schedule-juggling.//

"How much faster is it?" she asked, looking him over. He did look older, so much as Jono could look older. Mostly in the way he carried himself. "You better not be that much older than me."

//It's been a few years for me since graduation,// Jono replied, hitching one shoulder up slightly as he spoke. //I'm twenty-three now. So... hopefully not too much older?//

How much was 'that much,' these days?

"You're practically old enough to be a member of the establishment," Emma complained. "If you go to bed before ten at night, I don't think we can be friends anymore."
furnaceface: (Eyeroll)

//You mean, on those rare nights that I actually bother to go to bed?//

It was good to know that Jono was still immature enough to have friends, at least.

//Look, being older doesn't mean I'm suddenly all... responsible, Emma. Please, do give me a bit of credit, at least.//

"I had to check and see if they'd found some way to make you drink the Kool-Aid," she pointed out. "For your own good."

She'd been able to brain-zap him that one time, after all. Who knew what the freaks at Xavier's would do to play happy families.

It was an unfortunate truth that Jono was... not exactly difficult to brain-zap, granted.

//Just because I'm working there doesn't mean I have to be in agreement with them, most of th'time,// he noted. //I think half of Xavier's ideas are utter tripe, you know. I'm just in it for those occasions when I actually can help.//

Which he was currently doing by teaching kids normal things. Which, if nothing else, certainly beat being shot at.
