Glitter encrusted moosen stood guard in the entry to the transformed Town Hall, reminding all those in attendance that the night was about all things Canadian. Or things the Student Council had deemed Canadian - plus a whole lot of glitter.

Sparkly red maple leaves and paper geese hung from irridescent streamers, setting off the food tables as very much separate from the raised dance floor in case the terrifying papier-mâché beaver didn't make it obvious that the timbits were for eating. Or for dunking in the maple syrup fountain. Beyond pure sugar, there were plenty of bite-size portioned food and nonalcoholic beverages to push the theme into the bellies of all, no matter how tight the dresses!

Beyond the dance floor, the shadowy corners glowed with the twinkle of glittery maple leaf garland and a Joni Mitchell inspired moose that had been strategically positioned to look rather tragic in its lyric-covered glory. Yes, glory. For the evening was to be glorious. Or at the very least entertaining.

"Ew, gross! No, I'm one of those forever seventeen vampires who is technically eighteen by Fandom standards and still seventeen back home. It's complicated." Seriously. Caroline didn't know if she should be saying she was eighteen or one.

"Ohhhh, timelines," Miley recognized, nodding. "Yeaaah. My time difference isn't so bad, 'cause it's, like, November at home -- actually, I should probably start getting birthday checks soon, score! -- but when it's a year, that gets complicated. But hey, you get to have extra birthday parties, right?"

"Not exactly," Caroline said, making a face. "It's not like I'm physically aging so I totally skipped the party thing." Ignoring that their joint karaoke gathering had been riiiiiight around that time, oops? "But hey, if anyone sends me a check, I'm keeping it."

"But that's not fair," she pointed out. "You're going to have, like, way more birthdays than most people, right? Might as well enjoy them!"

...why did she even ever say words?

"Maybe!" Caroline said, trying to keep things positive. "Still, it means I'm already way older than Jake and so there's really no reason to discount my good friend who would look totally adorable standing next to you at a dance, so there." Her smirk finished her fast-paced words before she elbowed Miley gently in an encouraging manner.

Miley sighed like she was doing Caroline some huge favor. "Okay, fine, what's the plan?" she asked.

"Well, I would offer up a double date, but Jake would either be miserable or refuse entirely because he's no fan of Bobby's. Hmm. We could plan to hang out just the three of us and then I could just...leave suddenly?" Caroline offered. It was very high school- feeling.

"Or," Miley tried in a last-ditch effort, "you could stay, and I wouldn't have to run the risk of kissing a fourteen-year-old. Again."

Oh, canon.

"Fifteen," Caroline repeated. "And it's not like kissing is ever a bad thing. Especially if you do it when there's only a year separating you, right?"

Oh God, she so should not be allowed to spin this. She sounded like a madam."

"But he looks so tiny! Come on, tell me you look at him and don't think 'Aww, how cute!' in the little-kid way."

"No! I think damn, you should have seen him when he was thirty-five," she replied. Caroline would, of course, be leaving out the part where Bobby was a preacher. "You've met Jack. Same family."

"Now, Jack is hot," Miley conceded.

Which, given that her latest interactions with anyone named Jack had been with Jack Carter, was not something she'd felt the need to say for a while. Sorry, Jack Carter.

"Oh my God, you are so wishy washy about this," Caroline complained. "One date? Just one? I can even come along and facilitate adorable conversation!" Or seriously awkward conversation.

Could you blame her, Caroline? It was weird!

Finally she sighed and waved a hand. "Okay, fine, yes. But you have to come! And somewhere loud. Without any candles."

Candles set a tone that she was not very interested in setting. FACT.

"No food," Caroline promised. "It can be activity-based so you don't have to stare across a table or something!" She hated those sorts of things.

"Ooh, bowling, maybe!" she suggested. "Or a Bieber concert. Or horseback riding!"

Only in Crowley Corners were those all viable date options.
