Glitter encrusted moosen stood guard in the entry to the transformed Town Hall, reminding all those in attendance that the night was about all things Canadian. Or things the Student Council had deemed Canadian - plus a whole lot of glitter.

Sparkly red maple leaves and paper geese hung from irridescent streamers, setting off the food tables as very much separate from the raised dance floor in case the terrifying papier-mâché beaver didn't make it obvious that the timbits were for eating. Or for dunking in the maple syrup fountain. Beyond pure sugar, there were plenty of bite-size portioned food and nonalcoholic beverages to push the theme into the bellies of all, no matter how tight the dresses!

Beyond the dance floor, the shadowy corners glowed with the twinkle of glittery maple leaf garland and a Joni Mitchell inspired moose that had been strategically positioned to look rather tragic in its lyric-covered glory. Yes, glory. For the evening was to be glorious. Or at the very least entertaining.

"That won't be hard," Eric teased even though it hadn't been that bad at all.

It would be wrong to stick her tongue out at him at homecoming. "I could not have been that bad," she said.

"Well, maybe not," he replied, resting his hand on the small of her back.

She stepped closer for better dance positioning and said, "That's what I thought. So are you regretting coming yet?"

"Not yet," Eric said, "but please don't make me stay through the crowning ceremony."

"I wouldn't do that to you. Besides, that's when someone spikes the punch and kids start acting like people who've had spiked punch and then I feel like I should do something about it," Jaina explained. "I'd rather be on a date."

"And I still owe you a meal with a toy in it," Eric said.

"You are really stuck on getting me a meal with a toy," she told him.

"Food and entertainment for three dollars," Eric replied. "What's not to like?"

"The fact that you've apparently downgraded from the fives of dollars you were going to spend on me?" she teased.

"I stopped back to see what it would run me," he said. "I can even pay in nickels!"

He wouldn't dream of actually paying for something with nickels.

"Please tell me you're joking." Mainly because if he'd been in a Mooby Land or whatever and she'd missed it...

He grinned toothily at her. "Maybe."

"If you've already been there, we're going to have to change our plan," Jaina decided. "Change of venue."

"I might have already made reservations for somewhere else," he admitted.

Or had people do it. At four different places. None of them were drive-throughs.

You couldn't expect her not to ask. "And where would somewhere else be?"

"Depends," Eric replied. "Are you in the mood for Italian, Thai, or Spanish or something they call modern American?"

Someone was very pleased with himself, yes.

Jaina blinked. "I have a choice of four?" Boy was thorough.

"Unless you don't like those, and then I can make a few calls," Eric said.

"You have a real habit of surprising me," Jaina said after a moment.

It was definitely a compliment.

"I don't see you that often," Eric replied. "It gives me time to think."

"It shows," she said. "And speaking of not seeing me that often, when are you visiting?"

"When's good for you?" he asked. "I'm pretty clear in November."

"Early November is better," Jaina decided. "It's fairly quiet at home right now, but I can't guarantee it'll stay that way the farther away we plan."

"Sounds good," Eric said. "I'll tell Pam and Sophie-Ann."
