Homecoming Dance | Town Hall | Saturday Evening | Post I

Glitter encrusted moosen stood guard in the entry to the transformed Town Hall, reminding all those in attendance that the night was about all things Canadian. Or things the Student Council had deemed Canadian - plus a whole lot of glitter.

Sparkly red maple leaves and paper geese hung from irridescent streamers, setting off the food tables as very much separate from the raised dance floor in case the terrifying papier-mâché beaver didn't make it obvious that the timbits were for eating. Or for dunking in the maple syrup fountain. Beyond pure sugar, there were plenty of bite-size portioned food and nonalcoholic beverages to push the theme into the bellies of all, no matter how tight the dresses!

Beyond the dance floor, the shadowy corners glowed with the twinkle of glittery maple leaf garland and a Joni Mitchell inspired moose that had been strategically positioned to look rather tragic in its lyric-covered glory. Yes, glory. For the evening was to be glorious. Or at the very least entertaining.

Welcome to your 2011 Homecoming Dance!

"Oh, yeah, it was!" The brightness was easily back in Butters, although part of him realized that he sort of missed taking dance classes. He realized that, when he was taking them, he was far too young to realize that, hey, cute girls took dance classes. And they might talk to you about them, too, like right now! What a waste! "Much more than football practice, too, and a lot less boring!"

"And way more fun than cheerleading," agreed Miley, who was biased after having been forced to be the mascot at Seaview, sigh. "We should totally go take a class off-island sometime! There so aren't enough opportunities on the island, and it's super important to keep practicing, you know? And not just at fun formals like these."

Butters just about tripped over his feet right there. "Y-yeah?" he asked, blinking at Miley and half expecting her next line to be a cheerful, sing-song just kidding! Dancing is for losers!. But then he let a smile slowly slip through with a little more confidence as he said, "Yeah! We should! Gee, that'd be all sorts of fun!"

Oh, man, homecoming was the best! Kissin' girls, dancin' with girls. He never wanted homecoming to end ever!

"Let's do it!" she said, bouncing a little. She hadn't taken a real class in so long, and her body missed it. Especially having a good partner. "What kind of dance should we do? I bet we can find a ton in Baltimore. Probably not as many as in LA, but hey."

"Probably lots more than in Denver, though!" Butters said, laughing...actually, downright beaming. Miley had bounced. He made a girl bounce. It took everything he had not to bounce himself!

Thankfully, he had a grim reality to keep his feet ground, the smile fading slightly. "Just no tap dancing," he said gravely. He was worried that she might ask why no tap dancing, but it was important enough that he'd have to run that risk. "I can't do tap dancing anymore, but any other dancing is a-okay. Like...hey! We could do something that needs to people, like, you know, swing or ballroom or something!"

"Oooh, good idea!" she agreed. "I've pretty much got ballroom down... how about something Latin-y? We could dress up and everything!"

Because the world needed to see Miley in a dress with a slit in the leg. Obviously.

And she didn't ask about the tap dancing! Homecoming was officially the best thing ever!

"Salsa?" asked Butters, hands balled up and held up to his chin as if that would help him contain his excitement. "Or tango! It takes two to do that, hahaha!"

Yes, he thought he was funny, shush.

Miley burst out laughing. "Yes!" she agreed in between giggles. "Totally!"

It was Butter's lucky day! He'd found someone who was just as naive as he was!

Homecoming was officially some magical world of awe and wonder!

"G-gee whiz!" he said with an excited sort of nervousness, one where the happiness easily won over his anxiety. "Tango! I never tangoed before! It's gonna be real fun!"

"Definitely," she agreed. "Here, how about I'll give you my number and we can meet up sometime to figure out when to go into the city?"

And that would be her taking out her phone and handing it over for him to plug in his own number. Because Homecoming was magic.

Butters Stotch, you were getting a girl's phone number. Yesterday, you kissed a bunch of 'em, and now you were getting one's phone number, and it was for dancin', not for some emergency phone tree or bake sale or nothin' like that. It was for dancin' the tango, the dance of love, or was that a different one? Either way, he almost felt his knees going weak.

He fumbled a little for his own phone, too. "H-here," he said, all but shoving it toward her. "Y-you can put yours in mine, too!"

A girl's number. In his phone.

The South Park boys were not gonna believe this.

He couldn't wait to show Stan!

"All set," she said once her number had been entered, and handed it back to him. "We'll talk soon, okay?"

And then she was actually batting her eyelashes at him. OH BUTTERS. LOOK WHAT YOU WERE GETTING INTO.

"Wow." Butters didn't even bother hiding the fact that he was looking down at Miley's number in his phone, his smile stretching from ear to ear. It was like holding some great, mystical, elusive relic, to be held and cherished forever.

Look what you were getting into, Miley.

And then Butters blinked, realized he still had Miley's phone, and then shook his head and handed it over. "Yeah!" he said. "Real soon!"
