The Park, Saturday Evening

During the afternoon, workers had built up a large firepit in the center of the park. Smaller ones were built a short distance away from it, just to make sure nobody froze during the festivities.

There was ice on the pond, thick ice, and someone had set up a small booth alongside it renting out skates for the night. Closer to the bonfire, there was a buffet, partly already cooked (and with cocoa, too!), partly set up with raw meat, fish, marshmallows and vegetables for the more enterprising crowd who might want to roast something over one of the fires.

Lights hung in the trees, and the fires blared merrily. Fandom was ready for the changing of the years, and all were welcome.

Caroline laughed, "It's not like she'd find out you're a shifter. Just that you don't exist so she'd probably blame me for giving her a fake name and dragging you, the adorably sweet and polite boy, into it."

"What if I do exist and she finds out I'm six years older than you?" he asked. "She'd probably think I'm some loser who's too stupid to graduate or who likes it cause he gets to perve on teenage girls."

Jake snorted. "I can tell you now that I'll look exactly like this."

Only he'd be an even bigger cradle robber than anyone would want to believe.

Caroline was just going to press her face against his jacket for that. "You're an adorable sap." And he had a way with making her feel special in spite of herself.

"No? I'm not finding a random stranger to try this vampire makeouts thing on?" Caroline teased, tilting her head back to blink sweetly at him. "Um, F-Y-I, this is totally me trying to use the jealousy thing so you'll kiss me now. In case you forgot."

"I better kiss you now then," he laughed and ducked his head to kiss her a happy new year. Or just to kiss her because it was nice and he liked kissing her, even in the middle of a party.

Caroline smiled, pushing onto her toes to meet him partway. She was even a good girl for once and didn't try to hold him to her, drawing back after a moment. "I like it when my ploys work."

"Uh huh," he eyed her. "You realise you could just tell me to kiss you and it'd still work, right? I'm not sure what that says about me."

Her face fell a little. "Well that might make me sad. Let's try it out: Kiss me." And then she waited to see what happened.

Why would it be sad? Kissing was never sad if you asked him and he was just going to do that now and prove that it was nothing to be sad about. Especially not when he was nice and warm.

Sad because she'd wasted her time before, not because of anything wrong with his kissing. Which explained why there were no tears, just Caroline pulling herself closer and hooking her arms behind him under that warm jacket.
