Prom, Community Center, Friday Evening

It was possible that the strange creatures that had invaded Fandom last week were still on everyone's mind when the Student Council had designed the decorations for Prom. Glittery cardboard animal-hybrid monsters awaited everyone as they arrived to the community center, and made their way inside along a blue and yellow carpet flanked by glowing, glittery red eyes.

Nothing in the decorations looked like a rabbit though. Some memories were just too much to make fun of.

"Hey, you already got the most important parts," Dante said, laughing. (Well, except one.) "We fought him, we killed him, he set half the city on fire on his way out."

About that one...

"We?" Hyacinthe asked. "You had assistance?"

"...My brother, our friend Kat and a bunch of people from around here," Dante said.

"You have a brother?" Hyacinthe asked. "Did I miss that you have a brother?"

Dante almost said he wished he'd missed having a brother.

"I met him when I found out about what I was," he reminded Hya. "My twin brother."

"Right!" Hyacinthe said with a small laugh. "I'd forgotten you were half-angel, too."

Look, it just wasn't a thing where Hya was from. Most people were.

"How are you handling that?" he asked. "It seems like it 'twould be quite the adjustment if you'd not thought it possible before."

"Eh, fine," Dante said, waving it off verbally. "You don't have siblings, do you?"

"Nay," Hyacinthe said and he had trouble meeting Dante's eyes. "My birth was... unexpected. And I do not know my father."

He paused, then added, "...Neither did my mother."

"... Right," Dante said, after a moment. "Sorry. I didn't know."

"Of course you didn't," Hyacinthe said. "And if I did not wish to share, you still wouldn't. Here is not like home, where even though by the laws of Terre D'Ange, what occurred is considered heresy, but goes unpunished, for she is Tsingano. Here, it's different. That's important."

"Heresy?" Dante said, frowning. "How?"

"The preeminent law of the land, handed down by Blessed Elua himself is love as thou wilt. So to twist that precept with violence or deceit not only violates the laws of mankind, but also of angelic decree," Hyacinthe explained. "Thus, heresy. Sex is a sacred act, no matter how carnal. Namaah's own priests lie with strangers and courtesans are part of her holy order. To defile that is an insult to all."

"Yeah, but how is that your problem?" Dante said. "Or your mom's, unless she went at somebody?"

"Ah." Now Hyacinthe saw what he meant. "No, I mean, 'tis a heresy for my father to do what he did. My mother is innocent of all wrongdoing in the eyes of the law. Yet he still remains unpunished because she is not a fair D'Angelline main, but Tsingano." He debated stopping there, but... "At least, this is true in Terre D'Ange. Among my own people...my mother has lost her laxta, her virtue, even if it 'twas not of her own volition. Yet my uncle, who was the architect of it all, is free to come and go as he pleases, where she is exiled."

He gave Dante an apologetic smile. "This is not a fitting conversation for a party. I'm sorry if I've brought your mood down."

As always, he sounded polished and charming, but there was old hurt and anger in his eyes.

"Nah, I'm good," Dante said, sympathy in his expression. "That's fucked up, man. She deserves better than that."

"Agreed," Hyacinthe said. "'Tis an error I intend to set right some day. As much as I am able, that is."

"Is there anything you can do about it?" Dante asked.

"I can go to the tsingan kralis and demand that they reinstate my mother's laxta, punish her brother, and challenge the whole idea that a woman's worth lies in her purity." He gave Dante a wry smile. "'Tis vanishingly small odds that I can accomplish all three, but perhaps the tsingan kralis will listen."

"So..." said Dante, who was trying to process all of those words and couldn't, "... you're gonna find the big boss and start a fight?"

Hyacinthe laughed. "I'll find the king of the Tsingani and try to convince him that the old ways are wrong." He gave Dante a merry wink. "I believe 'tis considered rude to attempt to beat up your own grandfather."

"I dunno, depends on whether he's been a dick," Dante said automatically.

"Then perhaps 'tis better to say I prefer to lead with diplomacy and move to aggression once becomes obvious talking will get me nowhere further."

Obi-Wan and Anakin would be so proud!
