Prom, Community Center, Friday Evening

It was possible that the strange creatures that had invaded Fandom last week were still on everyone's mind when the Student Council had designed the decorations for Prom. Glittery cardboard animal-hybrid monsters awaited everyone as they arrived to the community center, and made their way inside along a blue and yellow carpet flanked by glowing, glittery red eyes.

Nothing in the decorations looked like a rabbit though. Some memories were just too much to make fun of.

"No," Kathy said, still grinning. "I'm not entirely convinced you know what they mean but you used them in a sentence correctly."

Eliot rolled his eyes. "It means I like men and women and go for more'n one of 'em at a time." A beat. "Right?"

DON'T TEASE THE OLD, KATHY, IT'S RUDE.

"Did you have Hardison define those for you on your way home?" Kathy asked, ignoring the narration entirely.

What a terrible child you had there, Eliot.

"You know the term 'bisexual' has been around way longer'n the internet, right?" Eliot asked.

"...And polyamorous?" Kathy checked.

Polyamorous. Alright, good to know. At least it wasn't short for 'polygamy'.

"That we used to just call 'being a swinger'." Among other, less savory terms. "You know you kids didn't invent all these sexualities, right?"

"Don't be ridiculous," Kathy sniffed. "Before our generation, all there was was hetero missionary position. And I thought swinging meant that two or more couples swapped for a night or whatever?"

"You think those couples doin' that were monogamous?" Eliot asked. "You think plenty of people weren't ending up with their 'usual' couple to swap with?"

"I never really thought much about it before," Kathy said. "Swinging's been replaced by hookup culture and consensual nonmonogamy."

She was only, like, two-thirds joking.

"Hang on. What's the difference between poly-whatever and 'consensual nonmonogamy'?"

This conversation was going to end up giving Eliot a headache, wasn't it. Also, if he was going to use it as a label, he should probably start remembering what came after the 'poly' part.

"Polyamory is part of consensual nonmonogamy, but there's more to consensual nonmonogamy than just polyamory," Kathy explained, amused that they were having this conversation, here and now. "All ducks are birds kind of thing. But hookup culture's not exactly the same thing."

She could offer you several useful blogs to follow for answers, Eliot!

Kathy did not want to turn Eliot onto blog culture. At best she'd end up getting long ranting texts about idiots on the internet. At best.

"Unless y'all are tryin' to write academic research papers about your own sex lives, I'm pretty sure you're just overcomplicatin' it."

Threaten her with a good time, why don't you?

"Actually, a lot of the scholarship around variant sexual cultures are super interesting!" Kathy said. "They show differing trends over time, and situate things in historical terms, and look at how sexual mores vary between cultural and ethnic groups..."

Your daughter was a nerd, Eliot.

Yeah, he'd noticed that.

"See, and some of us just enjoy the havin' sex part."

"Some of can enjoy both," Kathy said, nose in the air. "It's a gift!"

She was a brat was what she was.

". . . And now's the part where I remember this is a weird conversation to have with your daughter."

Kathy beamed. "Probably," she agreed. "But we're making up our own rules.

Eliot dipped his chin in acknowledgment.

"You and Cassie would get on so well it's kinda scary."

Bad enough Hardison and Trudy were friends now.

"Snark runs in the family?"
