Prom, Community Center, Friday Evening

It was possible that the strange creatures that had invaded Fandom last week were still on everyone's mind when the Student Council had designed the decorations for Prom. Glittery cardboard animal-hybrid monsters awaited everyone as they arrived to the community center, and made their way inside along a blue and yellow carpet flanked by glowing, glittery red eyes.

Nothing in the decorations looked like a rabbit though. Some memories were just too much to make fun of.

"In the movies, maybe," Dante said, after a brief moment of puzzling that one out.

Kathy shrugged and grinned. "Isn't this how all movies depict proms? The pretty people, the spiked punch, the likelihood of developing glitter-lung, the weird monster themes?"

"Think they don't usually have the girl hitting on the guy like this," Dante mused.

"Because of the patriarchy," Kathy declared. "And if I were seriously hitting on you, I would have suggested you put the flask back."

"You were suggesting I put the flask back," Dante said, reaching back for his own. "Just with the serial numbers filed off."

"Nah, not really." Kathy shook her head. "I waited until after I had it back to say anything. I was flirting."

One carried intent.

"Sure."

Dante took a swig from his own flask.

"You can come back to the room if you want," he said, a moment later. "After. No promises about what'll happen, but I think Anders might like it."

"I'm not expecting anything to happen," Kathy promised. "I'd just like to spend time with you guys. That's all. Being alone tonight would..." She shook her head. "Just companionship is fine."

"Good," Dante said. "'Cause I'd like you to hang around."

"Thanks," Kathy said with naked gratitude. She didn't even care if Dante thought she was strangely desperate to hang out with them.

Dante didn't, this time.

Awkwardness aside... there was something nice, about the idea of having this one evening where everyone could just be happy for a change. Anders would be happy. Kathy would be happy. And he'd have done it, no guilt, no need to fight for anything to eke out space for himself where he wanted it.

He shrugged. "You're doing me a favor," he said. "And putting a smile on Anders' face."

Normally, Kathy might have argued. Said the favor was being done for her, not by her. Said that 'favors' implied debt and there was nothing like that between them. Maybe even said that making Anders smile wasn't a favor to him at all.

But damn, of she wasn't tired of arguing with Dante or contradicting him. So instead she just said, "I'll be smiling too. So thanks."
