Homecoming Carnival, The Park, Friday

The weather had been kind, and it was just the right amount of cool for a Halloween-themed Homecoming carnival. The booths and activities were ready for visitors, and the Halloween decorations and spooooky music playing everywhere aimed to set the right kind of mood for everyone.

Yes, there was also black and orange glitter everywhere, because of course there was. Feel free to take some home with you, because it's going to be difficult not to!

"Well. If it helps, it lends a bit of gravitas. Grey is very in, lately."

Jon frowned in confusion. "I'm at a loss as to how a genetic predisposition for something can be 'in'. It's not a fashion kind of thing."

Oh, Jon.

"Everything to do with appearance is a 'fashion kind of thing', honey. Best get used to that now."

Jon sighed. "Maybe I should just stick with being unfashionable."

Fashion sounded exhausting.

Eliot sighed. "Don't tell Margo I told you this, but there is actually a middle ground between fashion and . . . what you have going on on a regular basis."

"A middle ground sounds agreeable," Jon said. "Even if Margo wouldn't agree."

He grimaced. "I feel like I should emphasize that I did always used to look put-together and professional. It just...it falls to the wayside a bit when you're fighting for your life and wandering an apocalypse."

Eliot tilted his head.

“You know what? Fair. So. What did you used to wear?”

"Slacks and button-up shirts and a jacket," Jon said. "Erm...generally grey and white. The Institute was...well, my former boss was, erm...a bit old-fashioned." He laughed humourlessly. "Not surprising, as he was over two hundred years old. Not that I knew that. It's just that, uh...well, I wanted to be professional when faced with that."

“And you went with gray and white.” Eliot sighed faintly (as though he wasn’t headed for a monochrome phase of his own eventually). “What did color do to hurt you?”

"It, um...seemed less professional?" Jon offered. Look, his only role models for this were his Oxford professors.

“And thus we see the problem with modern society.”

"...Lack of coloured trousers?"

"The belief that color is 'unprofessional'," Eliot said with a scoff. "I'm certain you could make any number of arguments regarding racism and colonialism and conformity out of it."

"Blame Beau Brummel," Jon said. "It's amazing how many of today's standards were started by one man with a grudge. If not for him, we might be wearing colours, high heels, and lace. Not that I necessarily disagree with the idea that the wealthy shouldn't control what's fashionable as a way to gatekeep the less fortunate from being able to make a difference in society, but his particular way involved far more of the same sort of thing he was supposedly against, only with less individuality and fewer flourishes."

“Beau Brummell,” Eliot echoed. “You are such a nerd.”

Jon grimaced. "I didn't actually know that five minutes ago."

“. . . And it just got creepy again. That happen to you a lot?”

"More than I'm entirely comfortable with," Jon admitted. "At least this knowledge wasn't excruciatingly horrifying?"

“. . . True.”

Eliot scooped up a ball and stepped back.

“And on that note, shall we give this game a try?”

Jon waved him at it. "I get the feeling I'm about to get much wetter."

“Depends,” Eliot mused. “On whether I decide to use magic or not.”

"I don't suppose I have any say in that," Jon noted.

“I don’t know. What to I get if I do it your way?”

"I'm...not sure what I can offer," Jon said, "but I'm up for suggestions."

“Use your imagination. For something other than fear.”
