Community Center, Friday Evening

Fandom's reunions tended not to start off too splashy. There was time to get outrageously drunk, sleep with someone, and then start shenanigans in the morning - you didn't need shenanigans at your opening reunion night party, right?

No, the community center had been tastefully decorated to Fandom party standards: with so much colored glitter that it felt like every time someone moved, they kicked up a small glitter storm. There were artfully crafted yet gaudy squirrel statues everywhere. Fosse lurked in a corner.

And the beverages were many, including a punch thoughtfully pre-spiked.

The theme tended heavily punchward, with a variety of alcoholic punches and even a large container of unspiked punch, sitting beside all the hard liquor.

The canapes were, predictably, glittery.

Stark was trying not to feel too odd here and wondering idly how many people had seen photos of him as a rainbow-dyed koala.

Punch seemed like a good idea. It certainly couldn't hurt and maybe he'd feel a bit more relaxed. Punch, and some little snack that left his hands and mouth lightly dusted with glitter.

"Reliving your high school glory days yet?" Margo drawled, though her snark sounded a little softer than with most.

What? One-eyed solidarity stuck.

"I don't think there was any glory," Stark said, offering a faint smile. "But I did like it here then. That's why I've kept coming back, and staying. Was there glory for you?"

Margo blinked. "Wait, you actually went to school here?" she said. "Fuck, I don't envy you."

She was just gonna glide past her own high school shit, thanks.

"I did," Stark confirmed. "The first time I'd been to school." The only time, really.

"It's a good place. Mostly."

"California, to be specific," Margo rasped. "It was a high school. It sucked. Most of them do."

"I've heard that," Stark said. Because he watched TV and movies, sometimes. "I've only visited California. I don't travel that often, here. And I've only ever been at this school."

He stood out, Margo. You could probably understand that. Although a cool eyepatch was a much easier accessory to pull off.

"Yeah, you've got the old face panel vibe going on, kids are going to be dicks," Margo said, waving in the direction of his face. "Guess at least this place has its fill of weirder shit so you don't stand out."

Octavia had been wearing a sleek-ish black sweater and some nice pants to go with it, but now that she was covered in a fine dusting of glitter, the general air of the ensemble wasn't quite as dark anymore.

Oh well. She surveyed the selection of foods with a faintly unimpressed frown, all the same.

(Not everything was going to work like picnics, Tavi.)

Parties might not be his usual thing, but food on the other hand absolutely was.

Eventually, Connor made it over to the food and drinks and started to survey the offerings. Rex too seemed to take an interest in everything still going on around them.

"Oiy, settle down Rex" Connor said with a laugh as he reached up to scratch the little dragon's head, a small poof of glitter falling as he did. "I already gave you a big dinner before we came. It's my turn to eat ok, mate? I'll see if there's anything you can snack on later."

And with that Connor grabbed some punch and some snacks too.

Drinks were absolutely a necessity tonight. Especially the spiked punch. LOTS of the spiked punch.

And glittery canapes were always just plain fun.

Steven looked over the food and decided that perhaps given the glitter he would give it a pass entirely, vegan or not, and instead content himself with some punch.

"Hello, Steven." Lana smiled and waved at him as she came to get some punch herself. "How have you been?"

"Lana, hello!" Steven took in the sight of Lana in an all white suit. "Don't you look smart? Excellent taste there, I'd say."

Lana would have no reason to know why he said it, but as often with Steven context was something that was more of a happy accident if it happened.

Context or not, Lana was pleased at the compliment. "Thank you. Are you having a good time?"

"It's all right, yeah," Steven said. He looked around. "I mean not really for me, is it? Haven't been around long enough to miss anyone, have I? But always good for an excuse to see friends."

Steven held up his punch glass in a small toast to indicate he of course considered Lana to be part of that category of people. "Yourself?"

Lana toasted him back. "I haven't seen anybody from my class except the ones who are still here. Nell was my roommate." She pointed her out, unsure if Marc would have mentioned her to Steven. "Time is odd here."

She shrugged. "A part of me would love to see Sabine again - we dated until graduation - but that's a bit awkward now, too. I don't know if she's coming."

"I've met Nell, she's lovely," Steven said. He tilted his head and listened as Lana spoke of her ex. "I imagine time could make that awkward as well, couldn't it? If she's still around Nell's age and here you are... being you."

Steven still hadn't gotten a handle on how best to refer to things like aging while one was away from the island.

"Several decades older, yes." Lana laughed. "You can say it." She had no angst about getting older; it was quite an accomplishment in her galaxy.

"But yes, it was a bit awkward. Still, there's not much to be done about it."

"At least you and Nell are still friends," Steven pointed out. It occurred to him that perhaps that was why the age difference between Nell and Marc (and Steven) didn't seem to bother Nell either. "I suppose it's not that strange having unusual friendships around here. Age or species or whatever."

"Nell's a good friend," Lana agreed. "It's good to see her again no matter how old she is. Mind you, I can't help feeling a bit protective of her. I'm glad Marc is teaching her self-defense."
