Community Center, Friday Evening

Fandom's reunions tended not to start off too splashy. There was time to get outrageously drunk, sleep with someone, and then start shenanigans in the morning - you didn't need shenanigans at your opening reunion night party, right?

No, the community center had been tastefully decorated to Fandom party standards: with so much colored glitter that it felt like every time someone moved, they kicked up a small glitter storm. There were artfully crafted yet gaudy squirrel statues everywhere. Fosse lurked in a corner.

And the beverages were many, including a punch thoughtfully pre-spiked.

Stark was trying not to feel too odd here and wondering idly how many people had seen photos of him as a rainbow-dyed koala.

Punch seemed like a good idea. It certainly couldn't hurt and maybe he'd feel a bit more relaxed. Punch, and some little snack that left his hands and mouth lightly dusted with glitter.

"Reliving your high school glory days yet?" Margo drawled, though her snark sounded a little softer than with most.

What? One-eyed solidarity stuck.

"I don't think there was any glory," Stark said, offering a faint smile. "But I did like it here then. That's why I've kept coming back, and staying. Was there glory for you?"

Margo blinked. "Wait, you actually went to school here?" she said. "Fuck, I don't envy you."

She was just gonna glide past her own high school shit, thanks.

"I did," Stark confirmed. "The first time I'd been to school." The only time, really.

"It's a good place. Mostly."

"Super freaky though," Margo pointed out.

"There is that. I'm almost used to the strangeness by now." Almost.

"Home wasn't exactly calm. Ever. You're from here, Earth- here, yes?"

"California, to be specific," Margo rasped. "It was a high school. It sucked. Most of them do."

"I've heard that," Stark said. Because he watched TV and movies, sometimes. "I've only visited California. I don't travel that often, here. And I've only ever been at this school."

He stood out, Margo. You could probably understand that. Although a cool eyepatch was a much easier accessory to pull off.

"Yeah, you've got the old face panel vibe going on, kids are going to be dicks," Margo said, waving in the direction of his face. "Guess at least this place has its fill of weirder shit so you don't stand out."

"...I don't think anyone has ever called it that before," Stark told her, amused at the phrasing. "I still stand out here but people aren't as bothered by it. Or they just ask, eventually."

And then he glowed at them and there were more questions and then usually that was the end of it.

"I don't mind standing out here, usually."

"Don't think anyone in Fillory would even notice your thing, honestly," Margo said, thoughtfully. "They'd probably just think some kind of fire-breathing chinchilla burned half your face off."

"Do you have a lot of those?" Stark wasn't actually sure what a chinchilla was.

"At home some people noticed. It depended on where we were."

"We were still working on the spell for the magical animal census," Margo said, "So I have no idea." She raised an eyebrow. "Not a lot of people like you back there?"

"Not so many of us, no." All that killing and enslaving put a dent in the population.

"Not many Baniks. Even fewer like me," he said, tapping his mask gently with one finger.

Margo gave that a little nod of acknowledgement. "Well, that's got to fucking suck."

"It gets lonely," Stark agreed. "I'm used to it by now." That particular sort of loneliness, at least. "Most of the time. It's been...I'm not sure how long since I saw any others."

"No big family meetings?" Margo asked.

Stark shook his head. "No family that I know of. There must have been some, once." He was reasonably certain he'd had a mother once. "I don't remember them."

Which explained some things about why he clung so tightly to people he grew attached to.

"Well, depending on who they are, that's either a curse or a blessing," Margo said, but she didn't sound unsympathetic.

"I'd like to think they were good people," Stark said. He didn't think anyone was still alive.

"Do you have family?"
