Community Center, Friday Evening

Fandom's reunions tended not to start off too splashy. There was time to get outrageously drunk, sleep with someone, and then start shenanigans in the morning - you didn't need shenanigans at your opening reunion night party, right?

No, the community center had been tastefully decorated to Fandom party standards: with so much colored glitter that it felt like every time someone moved, they kicked up a small glitter storm. There were artfully crafted yet gaudy squirrel statues everywhere. Fosse lurked in a corner.

And the beverages were many, including a punch thoughtfully pre-spiked.

Steven spotted Nell and gave her a friendly wave. Which was probably all the hint she needed to know that it was Steven and not Marc, since Marc did not do friendly greetings in general, let alone across a crowded room.

No, from Marc she'd expect perhaps a nod of acknowledgement, at best a lifted hand.

She smiled and waved back at him. He looked very nice and she hoped he was having a good time. She was pretty sure she'd seen his detective friend around as well.

Steven came over since he had a moment. "Evening, Nell. You look nice. Is that one of the new outfits?"

It was refreshing to be able to ask without having to explain why he knew it was even a question.

It is, yes," she said with a smile, though she did look a bit nervous. "I think it works well. And still mostly keeps, well, doesn't show off my legs much. Lana did a good job of finding them for me."

She gestured toward him and her smile became a little less anxious. "You look very nice your own self."

"It looks great. Still modest," Steven assured her. Which wasn't the sort of thing he would normally comment on but he knew in Nell's case that was a concern. "And cheers. Sort of a date night for me. Hardly a reunion when I've not been here long, is it?"

She let our a sigh of relief. "Oh good. Thank you. And oh dear, I'm sorry to interrupt your date night, but I thank you for coming over ty say hello."

She smiled at him. "You haven't been here long and I haven't left'"

"You didn't interrupt," Steven assured her. He indicated where Llewellyn was currently chatting with someone else. "We're not tied at the hip, he and I. Couldn't be if we wanted to, really. Considering."

Nell of all people would understand what would need to be considered. More specifically who.

"Besides, why come tonight if not to chat with friends?" Steven smiled at her since she was one such person.

Nell chuckled a little at the idea of then tied together.

"No, I suppose you couldn't. Please tell Marc I said hello. I'm sure this really isn't his sort of gathering. So many people."

She found them a little overwhelming herself, but she tried to come to them for a little while. And she agreed with Lana that she should try out her new skirty pants, as she thought of them, in public.

"Well, I know I'm always glad to see my friends."

"So many people, plus being expected to talk." Steven gave a mock shudder as though expressing Marc's own horror at making small talk with people. "Is there anyone you're hoping to see?"

Steven knew Nell said she didn't have many friends but he wasn't ruling out the possibility there might be someone other than Lana, given how long Nell had lived on the island.

"It's not exactly my strong suit either," Nell admitted. I'd be happier sitting off in a corner with a cup of tea just people watching." Which is where she would likely end up sooner rather than later.

"No one in particular," she admitted, "but there are lots of people it would be nice to just see and know they're doing well "

"Don't mind people watching either," Steven said. "Hopefully you'll get to see your people and they are doing well. Oh! That reminds me. I gave Liz - that friend I told you about? I gave her the tea and all. She was very grateful. Couldn't wait to try it."

"I hope so too," she said with a smile, then beamed at him. "Oh I'm so glad! If she wants more or wants something changed just let me know!"

"I told her you'd be happy for any feedback," Steven said. "Oh - she may ask after your jam as well. I mentioned how good it was."

"You did?" Nell smiled at him again. "That was kind of you. I'll certainly make sure I have some to hand if she wants to try it "

"I hope it's all right that I did?" Steven said. "Only I couldn't remember if you made them for sale. Mainly I was going on about how clever you are with your plants."

"Oh no, it's fine. I do sell them, yes," she assured him. "There a farmer's market on the mainland that I bring some of my stuff to. I don't manage a lot because..."

She spread her hand, gesturing around her. "I don't exactly have a dedicated place to make a ton of jam here'"

"Would you if you did?" Steven asked. "I don't think I've ever asked what you'd like to do if you were able. Besides help your sisters."

"I would," Nell said. "If I had to stay here? I'd love to find a little place where I could make my jams and teas and lotions. Maybe sell vegetables and fruit that I grew if I could manage a little greenhouse. Have a little spot where people could maybe choose a pot and plant something they wanted.

"I'm sure I could even raise some exotic flowers for Covent Garden, too. Enough of that sort of thing and I could make a decent enough living to get by."

"Well I can think of two loyal customers you'd have already," Steven said. Then, just in case it wasn't clear, he added, "Me. And Marc."

She laughed. "I'm not sure Marc was terribly impressed with my tea, but that's good to know."

"He liked it fine," Steven assured her. Which for Marc was an enthusiastic endorsement, really. "I liked it as well and I'm the expert anyway, aren't I?"

"Certainly more than Marc," she agreed. "So I guess that's a good thing."

Steven waved it off. "Don't let him worry you. He likes a lot of things without saying so. It's how he is. He's more actions than words."

After all, Steven had learned that lesson about Marc the hard way.

"He's also kind enough to not say he doesn't like something I made," Nell said with a smile. "He doesn't worry me. I think he's great just the way he is."

She felt like she'd always know where she stood with Marc.

"Well I certainly agree," Steven said, giving her something of a bow. "Bit of an exclusive club but worth the entrance fee, I think. Suppose it's not so much something you pay as an obstacle course but still. Worth it."
