The Beach, Monday afternoon

After classes were over (or roughly, it wasn't like he kept track like some kind of creeper), he put on his favorite Hawaiian shirt from the Shenanigans--the Hot Dog Bigfoots--and headed down to the beach.

In a little while, there were four fires roaring merrily: three on different grills with a variety of meats, one sequestered just for pork products, and one for vegetarian options. Steve'd even sourced some fresh ahi again and was feeling particularly pleased with himself about that.

The fourth fire was a cute little bonfire with neatly stacked rejected Shenanigan shirts placed a safe distance from it, along with buckets of water and sand for fire safety (and because McGarrett had 100 percent been a Boy Scout).

There were coolers of drinks including one of beer with a sign--"If you are from the HS and take a beer at a cop party, you're dumber than we thought and are v sad for you"--as the only disincentive.

Come on down, Fandom! Say goodbye to the summer. Eat food, drink beer, get rid of polyblend if that's your thing...

"Right. Still. Take care of yourself." Yep, lots of fussing. "So here you are. Being bold. Arms and everything."

Very nice arms, for the record, in Steven's opinion.

Listen, the fussing absolutely helped speed things up. It was known.

"Seemed like the day for it." Though not for those shorts, thank you.

Look, Steven was in one of his regular short sleeved shirts and light khakis, there was no judgement here. (Steven's experiences in extreme heat were limited to being in the dessert, so he tended to go with clothing appropriate for there when it was hot outside. Sandy locations like a beach were merely theme appropriate.)

"Well I think you look smart," Steven said. Very much the British definition of "smart." The intelligence of the shirt design was somewhat questionable but that was why Steven liked it.

And as Steven was ultimately the reason he'd worn the shirt, he appreciated the compliment.

"You don't think I should go for one of those?" he nodded in the direction of the extra Hawaiian shirts Anakin had brought.

He would not be going for those; his fondness for patterns and colour only went so far.

Steven looked them over. "It's not what I would choose for you?"

Which was a diplomatic way of saying no when he wasn't sure if it was something Llewellyn actually wanted to try.

Absolutely not what he'd choose for himself either, but if Steven had at all indicated he'd like to see it, well. Steven's opinion of his sartorial choices was given far more weight than anyone else's, let's just put it that way.

"Not what I'd choose for myself either, all told."

"Are you thinking of going more modern?" Steven asked. Then, in case Llewellyn was worried, he added, "Because I do like your regular clothes as well, even if there are a lot of them."

Steven figured that was a public-safe way of gently teasing about the need to remove so many layers.

"On occasion," Watts said. "Particularly for those trips we've discussed." He didn't mind sticking out, to a degree, but it would be nice to be a little more... anonymous, off-island.

"Long as you don't feel you need to do it on my account," Steven said. "I l - care for you as you are."

Steven hoped "care" was still all right for saying in public while Llewellyn was feeling skittish.

'Care' was perfectly all right.

"I've no doubt of that," Watts assured him. "But-" he added. "Were there something you thought you'd like to see... I'd consider it."

"I like seeing you," Steven said, smiling up at him. "However you might be dressed."

Or not as the case may be.

"Is that so?" Watts said, sotto voce.

Normally Steven would've stepped closer but that would've been a prelude to kissing. So he stayed where he was as he said, "One of my favorite things to see, actually. You."

Give it a bit more time, and Watts would get back to feeling comfortable with kissing in public.

"Well, I am quite happy to oblige, there," Watts said. "As you seeing me means I am in your company."

Steven was happy to give Llewellyn all the time he needed.

"Funny how that works," Steven said. "Since here's me enjoying your company as well. Not just the view. Though the view is nice."

What? He couldn't kiss, so he was complimenting.

Well... perhaps if they snuck off to a secluded bit of the beach at some point. Like a couple of teenagers.

The compliment did get a blush out of Watts though. So good job, Steven.

"Speaking of company- did you meet anyone new?" They better have been nice, if so.

Steven didn't hate the result of a blush, no.

"I did, actually." Steven looked through the crowd to see if he could point them out. He was smiling which was a good indication of how nice they'd been. "There's Scott over there. He works the Magic Shop. And Raiden who makes pizza. Said it's easy enough to do vegan options so that's handy."

Perhaps sad for pizzas which had higher aspirations in life but handy for Steven all the same.

"Ah, yes," Watts nodded. "I met Mr. Raiden at the picnic," yes, he had only the one name but it still felt odd not to tack the title on there. Stark merited an exception as there needed to be a way to distinguish him from Tony Stark (whom Watts hadn't met yet himself but had been assured existed, so). "He's very enthusiastic about his pizza." Which was not at all a bad thing.

"Seemed like it," Steven agreed. "He was a bit worried about Marc when I mentioned the bit about keeping Kosher. More worried than he needed to be but very kind that he would think of it at all, you ask me."

"Sounds like him," Watts said with a nod. "I mentioned I would often eat a pretzel or two as dinner while on the job and he was concerned that I was not getting enough protein. Or vegetables."

"Now I like him even more," Steven said. "Because he's right. Hopefully you're doing better these days?"

Possibly with Steven's direct intervention, given how often they ate together.

"Well, fewer active crime scenes taking up time I could be spending sitting down to a proper meal," Watts pointed out. "Also," he added, "Excellent company for a number of those meals, which is an incentive on its own."

"Funny thing," Steven said. "I've had excellent company for a number of my meals as well. Strange how that works out, isn't it?"

"My, you're right, there does seem to be a degree of synchronicity there," Watts said. "How fortuitous."

Speaking of meals had together, "I thought last night went well, didn't it?"

Steven was still second guessing himself in general after the past week. But it seemed like things went all right.
