The music is playing, the glitter is everywhere and outside the tent, the gondoliers are occasionally bursting into song.

Prom 2007 continues!

Rory's breath hitched. "Me too," she whispered.

The moment stretched longer than it should have, and Anakin stopped moving as he stared into Rory's eyes.

Rory's eyes darted across his face. "...what?"

Anakin blinked. "What what?"

"You were looking at me and you stopped and...never mind." Rory had started blushing again.

Anakin came within inches of leaning his forehead against hers.

He pulled back just in time.

Teacher. Idiot, his brain informed him.

"Sorry," he said, beginning to move again.

"Are you all right?" Rory asked hesitantly.

Anakin sighed. Not even close, he thought to himself.

"Fine," he said, pulling her just a tiny bit closer. "I'd forgotten how strange the lyrics are."

He was being maudlin over Rob Thomas. Something was wrong with the world.

"They aren't strange. They're descriptive," Rory corrected, conscious of how close she was now.

"You may need me to carry all your weight," Anakin recited along, "but you're no burden, I assure..."

"You need support," she translated.

"You tide me over with a warmth I'll not forget..."

"You get me through the hard times, because I remember how things were."

The significance didn't hit her until she'd said it.

Anakin swallowed hard, but didn't break eye contact. "But I can only give you love," he finished.

Stupid frelling Rob Thomas.

"I think that one is self-explanatory," she replied softly.

Anakin nodded. "The chorus is still silly," he claimed, trying to back out of the hole he'd dug himself.

"No, it makes sense too," she said, allowing herself a tiny smile.

"How can something be 'ever the same'?" Anakin asked.

"Never changing," she said.

"But things change," Anakin insisted. "Even stars burn out."

"Some things stay constant," Rory said quietly.

His eyes locked on hers. "Really?"

"Yes," she whispered, unblinking.

The music stopped.

Anakin was still holding on.

"Thank you for the dance," he murmured, leaning down to kiss her cheek quickly.

Rory felt her skin heat.

She pressed a kiss to his jaw. "You too."
