Homecoming Dance | Town Hall | Saturday Evening | Post I

Glitter encrusted moosen stood guard in the entry to the transformed Town Hall, reminding all those in attendance that the night was about all things Canadian. Or things the Student Council had deemed Canadian - plus a whole lot of glitter.

Sparkly red maple leaves and paper geese hung from irridescent streamers, setting off the food tables as very much separate from the raised dance floor in case the terrifying papier-mâché beaver didn't make it obvious that the timbits were for eating. Or for dunking in the maple syrup fountain. Beyond pure sugar, there were plenty of bite-size portioned food and nonalcoholic beverages to push the theme into the bellies of all, no matter how tight the dresses!

Beyond the dance floor, the shadowy corners glowed with the twinkle of glittery maple leaf garland and a Joni Mitchell inspired moose that had been strategically positioned to look rather tragic in its lyric-covered glory. Yes, glory. For the evening was to be glorious. Or at the very least entertaining.

He was crazy, there was no other explanation but Jake shrugged it off. It'd been an insane few weeks, that meant he could let lose a little now, right?

He rolled his shoulders, finding the rhythm in the movement and so the whole shuffling his feet thing and flailing his arms was kind of bad. Not white boy trying to dance bad, but native boy trying to dance bad which looked suspiciously like the first one. Shhhh.

He could stand on his hands, though, and he could pull off a backflip (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZhuZHNWYhXI&feature=related). Whether it was breakdancing was a different matter, though.

Jono gave that backflip the consideration it was due, which, for the most part, took the whole of about ten seconds before he ran into and managed one of his own.

He would have been sawed clean in two in the Danger Room (or, hell, the Danger Grotto back at the Academy) if he couldn't manage that. And he wasn't even being held back by leather trousers tonight.

//Not bad,// he decided when he landed, turning a bit of an all-in-the-eyes smirk at Jake. //What else have you got?//

Okay, so Jake hadn't expected that and he laughed as Jono matched him. Too bad there wasn't a convenient wall he could run up before flipping back.

"You've been practising," he accused as he stalled to think of what to do next. So what about standing on his hands and doing that whole twist thing with his legs before flipping back to his feet?

//A bit,// Jono admitted, before settling back and watching Jake's .... thingie. That thingie that people did, with the twisting and the...

Look, just because Jono was a bit more agile than he used to be didn't mean he knew the words for that sort of thing. And he hardly had the upper-body strength that he'd need for a move like that. So, after a bit of consideration, he dropped down and did the helicopter, swinging one leg in a wide arc clear around himself, while jumping over it every time it was about to hit his other foot.

He could manage that. That was kind of like some of the fighting moves he'd gone over a million times before.

//Don't think I could do much of anything while upside-down, though,// he acknowledged, as he found his footing again.

"I'm kind of cheating," Jake pointed out. "It's not like I ever had to work out to be able to do this."

Which didn't mean it wasn't fun and Jake decided to see how many handhops (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Hy8F9UuedY&feature=related) he could pull off.

And if Jono got just the slightest bit envious of those handhops, he certainly wasn't going to show it. He had nice arms, and he weighed about as much as could be expected with most of his insides missing. But he had a limit to the amount of time he could spend bouncing up and down with all of his weight balanced on one hand.

//Granted. I'd get eaten alive back home if I didn't work at it, myself.//

And so he dropped to the floor again and did some windmills. Those, at least, were easy enough, so long as nobody wandered close enough to get a boot to the face or anything.

They looked pretty impressive either way.

"Why do I get the feeling you've gone this before?" Jake wondered as he returned back to his feet. "You've got way more rhythm than I do. I just pull off tricks."

He could pull off another backflip (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HSkCA8AkVfk) from where he was standing, though. Because it was fun and he didn't want to lose too much.

//I'm a musician,// Jono pointed out, transitioning from the windmills to some nice, simple, spinning on the floor on his back knees and arms tucked in around his chest.

His suit was probably not going to survive the night. //And a fighter. Rhythm and agility are sort of like two of th'great driving forces in my life, you know.//

Or, at least, the ones keeping him sane and not-dead respectively.

Jake had agility and pure strength. The whole training thing had never happened, though, which meant he was more of a brawler than a fighter.

"Fine! You win, I completely underestimated your sense for rhythm," Jake laughed. "Also, I never break danced in my life."

//Well, for what it's worth, you can kick my arse any bloody day of the week when it comes to anything that requires a decent amount of upper-body strength. I'm not a pushover, but I'm hardly ever going to be half as built as you are, mate.//

Never say never, Jonothon.

//You keep doing those upside-down things, and rhythm won't be remotely important, really. That's bloody impressive.//

"They're kind of fun too," Jake admitted. Hopefully no one was going to hold this against him. "I might have to look into this thing so I can beat your ass next time. If you're not too old by then."

//I'm not planning on knocking around my own world for th'rest of my days,// Jono scoffed, shaking his head as he picked himself up off the floor and dusted off his clothing. //I keep hanging around there, I'll be bloody near fifty by th'time th'last of my friends from the island graduate, you know.//

Provided Earth 616 didn't go and do something stupid like speed up more, or slack off to a near-stop or anything when he wasn't looking.

//You keep up with it, and we'll see how well you fare th'next time we have occasion to flop around on th'floor like epileptic monkeys.//

"At least we're cool epileptic monkeys," Jake pointed out, snorting.

"So what's the plan? You're coming back here? Play teacher? I'm not sure I'll be able to take you seriously after this."

//... Lord. Could you imagine me as a teacher? I mean, it's different at Xavier's. I'm a TA, there, but I didn't go to school with any of those kids. Around here it'd be...// He squinted, and then shrugged. //It'd be weird. Awkward. I don't think I'd be able to take myself seriously any more than any of you could. But, I mean... assuming I did come back here, maybe to be close to Raven until she graduates or something, it isn't like there aren't places to get a job, at least. I do have experience with Groovy Tunes, and th'library, for a start.//

"There's that. You didn't magically get a lot of money, did you?" Jake asked. "Otherwise you could buy up Groovy Tunes. I don't even know who owns that place. I'm sure Raven will appreciate it."

Even if somewhere Jake still found it a little weird to think of Jono with anyone but Didi after all this time. Not that he was blaming Jono, it just was weird.

For what it was worth, sometimes Jono still had moments where he had to wrench himself out of moping over Didi's... leaving. They hadn't been meant to be. Not for always. But while she'd been here, it had certainly felt as though they were.

//Sadly, there's no vast Starsmore fortune, so far as I'm aware. Much as I miss that little shop, whoever owns it is going to continue owning it until some other buyer comes along.//

Alas.

"They still hire you again," Jake pointed out. "It'd be kind of nice having you around again. We won't judge if you have to wear yellow spandex during an invasion."

//I'm certain you wouldn't,// Jono moaned, rolling his eyes a little. //And, see, if you asked me what I thought, I'd say I had you figured to be one of th'ones standing back and laughing, filming th'whole ordeal if I were to ever put on that ridiculous costume again.//

He'd just... put on some different ridiculous costume. It could happen.

"Me?" Jake looked shocked, shaking his head. "I so wouldn't. I'd film like the first five minutes or until you need someone to help save your ass."

//Whichever comes first? You know, I usually do last longer than five minutes when push comes to shove. Unless I put an end to th'worst of it before that point.//

Which was surprisingly easy to do, when you blew things up as well as Jono could.

"Look, I can't have you get all the fun," Jake sighed. "I bet I could find someone to film it for me, though."

//That's more like it,// Jono replied. //Might want to find such a person early on, hm? I can't promise I'll save you any, after all.//

"Oh man, I'm sure it will be way too easy," he assured Jono. "You're sounding nostalgic, though."

//Maybe a bit,// Jonothon admitted, idly straightening out his jacket cuffs. //I mean, I've done plenty of fighting back home, but there's nothing quite the same as a Fandom invasion. Or the people you fight one back with.//

"We've missed you too," Jake smirked, reaching out to pat Jono on the shoulder. "Maybe we should have picked the zombie song then."
