Come As You Were Dance, Community Center, Saturday Evening

Originally, this was going to be a much smaller event, but then Fandom had to be Fandom and Portalocity had to be Portalocity, and now Zoe was wondering if there would be enough food for everyone or if she'd have to get things from the local restaurants.

For the moment though, everything was set up nicely. There were tables and chairs set up with blue and gold tablecloths, each covered with glitter from years of use. There were balloons, streamers, and other slightly tasteful decorations, also covered in glitter from years of being stored with things that were also covered in glitter. Don't worry, no one had died from a glitter overdose yet.

Once the food was set out and the (non-tainted) punch was ready, it seemed like things were as good to go as they'd ever be. If things got too crowded, hopefully a fire marshal wasn't among the folks who had come back to town.

"Kennedy?" A blink. A beat. And then a smile that was genuine, if not as large as his smiles used to be. "Kennedy! Hey, it's been way too long!"

Way, way, way too long.

"Right?" Kennedy got that, the sort of stuff that led to smile shrinkage; her grin was about the same size as always, but it lacked some of its old carefree brashness. "Even without factoring in the time weirdness, it's been forever. Good to see you, though. And the-- hey, so did I ever tell you I can actually handle that sword you gave me now?"

Zack blinked, and then snapped his fingers, his grin getting just a tiny bit wider.

"My old SOLDIER sword, right? You never did, no," though in fairness, she really wouldn't have had much of a chance to. "I guess next step will be handling something like the one I use now, huh?"

... Sure, Zack. That would totally happen.

"Yeah, that's a little... how is that even practical?" Kennedy asked, laughing.

Squeenix physics, Kennedy. That's how.

"I feel like this is where I should be making a joke about overcompensating, but nah."

"I'd have to be lacking somewhere in order to feel like I need to compensate," Zack replied, not even missing a beat. There was a little grin. "It's not overcompensating if you can actually use a sword like this, is it?"

It kind of helped that the sword hadn't been Zack's idea. Not really. And he'd much rather it still be in the hands of the man who had given it to him.

"More than I needed to know, thanks," Kennedy shot back teasingly. "And I mean, it is a pretty sweet sword. Not so much with the subtle, but cool."

"Well, subtlety really isn't the point," Zack mused, reaching back to pull it from his shoulders, and holding it up to look at it thoughtfully. "It's kind of... meant to be a symbol, you know?"

"Right, people don't give you weird looks or assume you're going to the Renaissance Faire or something," Kennedy recalled, with a distinctly admiring look at the sword. "My world's kinda a pain in the ass that way. What's the symbol for, exactly?"

"For this?" Zack closed his eyes, pressing the cool metal of the blade to his forehead for a moment before putting it away again. "Honor. Dreams. And... memories. This was my mentor's sword. My friend's sword."
brat_inslayage: (Hmm)

"Wow." Kennedy's voice had dropped to a low almost-whisper. "So, pretty special then, huh."

No, really, Kennedy?

"Guess we've all been through a lot since we left this place," she said thoughtfully; I'm sorry just seemed too trite. "So this is me, extra glad to see you again."
puppy_fair: (Happy!)

"It was a near thing," Zack replied. And what that 'it' was, he wasn't exactly volunteering. Not completely. Not unless he was asked about it. "But yeah... it's good to be here. It's good to be able to catch up with people again. I've missed... everyone. Really, everyone."

And Kennedy wasn't going to ask; she'd actually learned how to not push for information. Well. In some cases, at least.

"I've been back a few times," she said, hooking her thumbs into her belt loops and looking out across the room, "but there's never quite this many of us here all at once. Do you miss it?"

"Like you wouldn't believe," Zack admitted, sounding wistful for just a moment. "I lost most of today just... looking up at the sky. Watching birds go by. There's not really a sky to speak of in Midgar. Or birds."

Or freedom.

"How about you?"
