Come As You Were Dance, Community Center, Saturday Evening

Originally, this was going to be a much smaller event, but then Fandom had to be Fandom and Portalocity had to be Portalocity, and now Zoe was wondering if there would be enough food for everyone or if she'd have to get things from the local restaurants.

For the moment though, everything was set up nicely. There were tables and chairs set up with blue and gold tablecloths, each covered with glitter from years of use. There were balloons, streamers, and other slightly tasteful decorations, also covered in glitter from years of being stored with things that were also covered in glitter. Don't worry, no one had died from a glitter overdose yet.

Once the food was set out and the (non-tainted) punch was ready, it seemed like things were as good to go as they'd ever be. If things got too crowded, hopefully a fire marshal wasn't among the folks who had come back to town.

Karla smiled up at him and took it, drawing herself in closer. "Hello, darling" she said, giving him a fond smile. "It was nearer than you think. There's chicken pox back home."

Hannibal leaned in to kiss her cheek. "The children, I hope, and not another of Warren's odd reactions, like the poison ivy?"

"Cora and Nyles both," Karla said with a sigh before leaning up to return that kiss on either cheek. Honestly, she was pretty sure she'd rather deal with the chickenpocked children than Warren with poison ivy again.

"But it's one of those diseases we allow to run its course, so long as it's properly monitored by a Healer, so they stayed home and Warren with them. And since Kayla's too young to be exposed, she got to come with me."

"And I'm very pleased to see her, too." Hannibal smiled at Kayla. "How old is she now - nearly eighteen months?"

"Almost," Karla said as I did math and cursed a lot. "I can hardly believe it. It can't possibly have been that long, can it?"

She looked around at the assembled people and shook her head. "Of course, it barely feels like I've been away from school that long, but seeing all these faces here reminds me how long it's been." Her expression was wistful. "I'm happy back home--happier than I ever thought possible--but I've missed this. And them. Even the people I didn't know very well."

"Former friends, former concerns, former you," Hannibal said. He smiled. "But only present you has your realm. And this one." He ruffled Kayla's hair.

"She does make up for a lot," Karla agreed, hugging Kayla close. "Would you like to hold her?"

"I will if you like, but don't feel you have to offer," Hannibal said.

Which was the most gracious way he could think of to say that he wasn't really much of a small-child person, as lovely as Kayla was.

As opposed to his partner, who would kidnap Kayla if he thought he could get away with it.

"In that case, I think I'll keep her," Karla said, fighting back a grin. "It's been an exciting day for her and I'd hate for her to start acting up just because she's overtired."

Don't worry; Hannibal would make him put her back where he got her from! Weren't cats enough problem?

"You've been showing off how marvelous she is to all of your old friends," Hannibal translated.

"Of course!" Karla said with a laugh. "It would hardly be fair to keep a darling like her to myself. Think of how devastated they would all be!"
