Originally, this was going to be a much smaller event, but then Fandom had to be Fandom and Portalocity had to be Portalocity, and now Zoe was wondering if there would be enough food for everyone or if she'd have to get things from the local restaurants.

For the moment though, everything was set up nicely. There were tables and chairs set up with blue and gold tablecloths, each covered with glitter from years of use. There were balloons, streamers, and other slightly tasteful decorations, also covered in glitter from years of being stored with things that were also covered in glitter. Don't worry, no one had died from a glitter overdose yet.

Once the food was set out and the (non-tainted) punch was ready, it seemed like things were as good to go as they'd ever be. If things got too crowded, hopefully a fire marshal wasn't among the folks who had come back to town.

"How is Peter?" Cade said. "He's around, right? I haven't seen him yet but there's a karking ton of people here."

"He's somewhere around here, looking at his phone." Exactly like she had been, not very long ago. Yes. "He's good. We've achieved some great things lately."

"He running the world now?" Cade guessed.

"Something like that." There was a certain faint wryness to her tone. "We've launched the Free People of Earth. A kind of a world government. More nations are joining us all the time."

"Should I tell you how it works out?" Cade asked, smiling.

Envy gave him a faint smile back, but shook her head. "No, I'd rather find out for myself. I have my guesses and I'd like to see how they pan out." She'd gathered up bits and pieces from various future flashes provided by Fandom, anyway. "As for how things will work out where I'm from..."

Well, that was a different matter entirely.

"Is it looking okay?" Cade asked.

"I have a band and a boyfriend." Maybe the order of those two things was telling, but she ignored it. "It's looking okay."

This was as good a time as any to drop this next bit in, right?

"Also I've changed my name. It's Envy, now."

"Because of the band or the boyfriend?" Cade asked, arching up an eyebrow.

Envy raised an eyebrow right back. "Because of me," she said, and it was pretty easy to tell she wasn't overly pleased with that question. Still, a little more dryly and mildly, she added, "Although I have to give you points for not being one of the people asking 'what, like the emotion?'"

"I'll take all the points I can," Cade replied. "Why did you change it? Just because? I mean, you're around Peter and guys named Bean and Achilles, so..."

"Because I felt like it." She flicked her bangs back from her eyes. "I guess Natalie just didn't fit anymore."

There was a whole lot of redefining going on.

"I think Envy suits you," Cade said, "and I know a thing or two about redefining yourself."

The guy had dropped his last name almost a decade ago now.

"Thank you."

Every time someone said something positive about the change, she found herslef a little more grateful than she wanted to be.

"It's a process."

Cade nodded. "It's easier when you meet new people," he said. "So...what kind of stuff does your band play?"

"Someone said we have a fractured, twisted pop sensibility." She was aware that didn't necessarily mean much. "We have a demo we're shopping around some labels right now. You know, just in case."

She hadn't spent a whole lot of time thinking about what it'd mean for her life if they actually got a deal.

Cade looked impressed. "You're that good."

"Guess so."

They were. Also, she was.

"You gonna sing for us when the DJ stops doing whatever horrible thing he is doing to music right now?" Cade asked.

"No."

She just barely shook her head.

"You'll just have to come to Toronto for that."

(Or she could give him something to listen to like she'd done with Jono.)

"Send me the next time you're playing and I will. Not like my life is scheduled full," Cade said.
