Anything But White Party - Stark Industries, Friday Night

The ballroom was once again set up for guests at Stark Industries, this time with a decidedly colorful theme for it. Where the color white could reasonably be avoided it was avoided: from the decorations to the lighting, to the food and drinks provided for the guests.

Because no one enjoyed a nice theme more than Tony Stark.

Steve strode across the ballroom and stared up at the new Chihuly chandelier installed over the dance floor. "When I suggested we switch out the art, I meant the kids' paintings," he said, pointing to the new, very colorful, pictures that had been blown up from construction paper size to 5 foot tall show-stoppers. "I still think the pictures of Princess Thor riding on the unicorn wins, though."

"Exactly!" Liliana said, beaming at him. "Intellect, various kinds of mental disciplines like telepathy, telekinesis, and telemetry, and general control."

"And black's the one near by where you live?" Steven said, trying to see if he remembered it right.

"There's plenty of blue and green as well, from the ocean and the woods, but yes. There's a particularly rich vein of black mana by my house." She smiled, like a cat with cream on cue. "I can only imagine what I could do with all of it at my fingertips."

She did. Frequently.

Steven smiled, proud that he'd remembered that bit. "And that's...swamps as well?"

"Yes!" Liliana was going to give him an A+ in a minute. Show her what stickers were and he'd be getting a gold star as well. "Forests, plains, water, swamps, and mountains."

Steven was rather pleased with himself. "Not bad at all I'd say. Well done me. So teleportation would be blue. I'll have to pay attention next time Illyana does it. See if I notice any blue about."

Shame he didn't really know Kurt. No doubt of the blue with that teleporter.

"You might not. Not all magician's magic match their mana." A crackle of purple fire danced around her fist for a moment before fading.

"But their dress matches their magic?" Steven asked, since she did have that nice frock on. Even if Steven wasn't the type to notice things like how well it showed off her - ahem - features.

But, let's be clear. It absolutely fuckin' did. Her tits looked great. (They always did, though, let's be clear about that, too.)

"Not for everyone," Liliana said. "Just those with panache and a signature style."

Which described a lot of planeswalkers, honestly. It was like someone had decided they needed to be color-coded or something.

"Funnily enough mine's white," Steven said. "My suit I mean. If I'm using - well, I mean they're not my abilities. Sort of borrowed, really. But yeah."

"I was just talking to Steve about how I was forced to wear white for many years and now can't stand the color," Liliana noted, though that was hardly the only reason. "But what do you mean borrow?"

"The abilities are part of working for a god," Steven explained. He gestured towards himself. "Do I don't have them now. This is just me. But if I summoned the suit then I'd have them. Sort of summons the powers as well, you see."

"The powers are transmissible by formalwear?" Liliana asked, certain she was mistaken. "What happens if someone steals it?"

"Not possible," Steven said. "Has to be summoned and only an avatar - that's me and Marc - can do it. If someone nicked the jacket off me somehow it wouldn't do anything for them. Which is a shame because it has healing powers. It'd be dead handy to be able to use that on other people."

Like when one's beau got shot, as for example.

"But, again, you only have access to them while you're formally dressed," Liliana said, her incredulity barely eased by the explanation that at least it wasn't as simple as stealing someone's laundry to take their powers.

"Correct," Steven said. And then, in case this helped at all, "It's a very nice suit. Even smarter than this one, if you can imagine."

Though of course the tie and pocket square he was currently wearing ranked higher for him. Not that Liliana would know that.

It did not actually help, save for where Liliana just decided, 'Fuck it why not?' "It would be just like a god to be that concerned with the aesthetic," she declared.

"Actually that was me," Steven said, proudly. "Khonshu's idea was more of a linen wrapped thing. You know, like a mummy? That's what Marc wears. That and a cape."

If you could imagine wearing a cape, Liliana. Silly, right?

Well, okay also yes.

And, for the record, Liliana frequently wore a fur mantle, not a cape. They were very different things.

"How long does it take for him to put that on?" The linen wrapping alone...

Because obviously Liliana had experience with wrapping mummies. And also unwrapping them. Look, she had a single schtick here, okay?

Funnily enough she was talking to one of the few people on the island who did know how long it took to wrap or unwrap a mummy.

"It's not bad at all," Steven said. "It's summoned as well, you see. So maybe a few moments at best. Though these days he and I can switch in and out quicker than a blink. We've gotten quite good at it."

Even if they hadn't needed to both summon their suits in a while. As far as they were aware.

"And what do you do with all these powers of yours?" Liliana couldn't help but ask.

"Protect those that travel at night," Steven said, willfully leaving off the part about vengeance. "Only it's not that literal. It's more Khonshu looks out for people so if he sees there's trouble worthy of his attention, he sends us to take care of it. He can't act directly, you see. The Egyptian gods aren't able to. Need to do it through their avatars. In his case, that's us."

He just kept talking and Liliana just kept blinking. Honestly, the vengeance would have made more sense. "So...you get dressed up in your party best and then go out and play hero for people?" she summarized.

"I mean it's - it's a little more involved than that," Steven said. "But I suppose so, yeah."

"This is what happens when you get mixed up with gods," Liliana sniffed, though she had some thoughts on the nature of 'godhood' as well. "Ridiculous whims and nonsense, from beings too powerful for things like 'reason.'"
