Parents' Weekend Meet & Greet, Town Park [Friday Afternoon]

Barney was smart and had purposefully blocked all outgoing mail from Fandom to his New York City (sorry, no luck for you, Robin) and so could blissfully oversee the gathering of guests, students, teachers, and townies happening in the park. The day was bright and sunny, regardless of what any weather reports might claim.

The Student Council had done a nice job getting things together to greet the visitors. A wide variety of sumptuous food was spread out on long tables at one end of the park. In the center were plenty of comfortable blue and gold tables and chairs perfect for sitting, chatting, and eating. To the other end of he park was the registration table where visitors could sign in and pickup their name tags.

Just above the registration area was a gaudy banner announcing the start of a calm and relaxing weekend. Okay, a weekend where Barney got a lot of popcorn to listen to radio.
Welcome to Parents' Weekend 2009!

Oop, high-five break!

Which, if anyone asked Daxter, was professionally executed in the sort of way that only a guy of his particular skill and grace could manage. It might have involved a leap in the air and a bit of spinning.

"Yeaaah!"

And Jak did his part. Gladly. It had been way too long, and even Zack wasn't much of a substitute: he fist-pumped the way fist-pumping was intended to happen, jamming his arm back and...

... hold the pose...

Rock.

There were traditions that had to be upheld, man.

... Hold the pose....

And, happy sigh.

"Jak, old buddy, it has been entirely too long."

A beat.

And then he was eating again. The food was clearly sub-par and terrible, which was why he had to eat as much of it as possible. For the good of everyone here. He was a hero. Clearly.

Yes. In all their adventures over the past year, it had totally been all Dax, risking life and limb. Not that Jak cared overly much. He crossed his arms and beamed in a way that was a little more restrained. So, yeah. His life was kind of awesome? But not that awesome. He guessed.

... Take note of Jak narratively wheedling around the whole pretty girls thing. It was Dax. If Dinah showed up, he might... have to hide the Ottsel, or something.

Ottsels fit well under tables and in dresser drawers, it was a well-known fact!

Daxter would not be pleased if he found himself unceremoniously stashed under a table because of a girl. A girl! The only one allowed to do something like that was Daxter, thank you very much.

"So classes aren't terrible, huh? What are they teaching you here, Jak? Reckless Endangerment 101?" Had Dax known that such a course could possibly exist, he might have taken it himself. Because Jak definitely would, and someone had to keep him out of too much trouble, right?

Yeah. Dax was awesome at keeping Jak out of trouble.

Just look at their track record.

Really! Just look at it! ... Okay, let's not look too closely to Lurker Rat hunting in the Boggy Swamp. Yich.

Jak shrugged, and mimed a punch. Punching people, mostly! And running. There had been treadmills, and if Jak had been slightly more sensitive to the issues of the modern tiny mammal he might have been a little more careful about implicating that with a hand motion and a raise of his eyebrow.

Daxter's own eyebrow, or, more accurately, what had once been an eyebrow and was now a spot of orange fuzz to match all of the other spots of orange fuzz, twitched upward slightly, and Dax had to take a moment to set down the red, crunchy, fruity thing and to cross his arms over his chest, and to stand up proud and tall(ish) and indignant, because that was just what Daxters did.

It was their calling in life, really.

"I'll have you know," he said, enunciating every last syllable with the slow, deliberate clarity that one might use while speaking to a small child, "that I take exceptional care of myself, Jak."

He did. Also, he had to finish his apple now. Preferably from a perch on Jak's shoulder, so that he could make loud, obnoxious crunching noises into his ear.

Hey, now that was just like old times and-- okay, there was only so much nostalgia Jak could take when that was spittle. He pulled a face. Gross, man. So gross. And sure he did. Uh... was there anything... you know.

He made a questioning gesture.

...About the fuzzy.

"Nnnnnnnnnnnnnnnope." Daxter's lips made a little pop sound at the end of that, because that was really the only way to properly follow up a 'no' of such morbid finality.

Or something.

"Nothing. Squat. Nix, nada, nil, zilch, zip, zippo, zot, diddly, absolutely jack, Jak."

Were he any other Ottsel, he might have even made en effort to make that sound less accusing. Ish.

"And then some!"

Right. Touchy subject. Sorry to have brought it up. Jak rubbed the back of his head, jostling his shoulderplate for a moment. Uh. Okay. Listen, how about-- Jak... should show him around. Yeah. Totally.

He began to turn. Away from the food.

"Hey!" It was fortunate that Dax was such a stretchy little guy. He managed to grab an armload of... something that looked kinda food-like! And now he was going to hoard it to himself from his perch on Jak's shoulder.

Well, he might share. If a pretty girl asked him nicely or something. He'd let them have the little juicy red things that he'd almost choked on. And then warn them about the pits, and then they'd inevitably swoon and thank him for the brave and timely warning, and...

Dare to dream, Dax. Dare to dream.

"Soooo. Where're we goin'?"

You know, that was actually a really good question!

... Beach. He was going to drag Dax down to the beach that didn't have waters full of Lurker sharks. Or alternatively he was going to move vaguely in the direction of the beach, which was the direction that had no food in it, but plenty of trees, and a pond.

Maybe he was just getting used to the weight of Dax on his shoulder again. It was possible. He was definitely making up for lost time, holding up his hand for a quick fist-bump.

Fist-bump! Booyah! Woo! Best buds, together on a strange island, exploring the unknown!

... There was something familiar about that scenario that wasn't sitting well with Daxter, though he couldn't quite put a finger on what.

Ah well. He'd just settle in for the ride and continue making loud, slobbery, crunching sounds as he worked on his lunch. As you do.
