fandomtownies | Parents' Weekend Meet & Greet, Town Park [Friday Afternoon]

Barney was smart and had purposefully blocked all outgoing mail from Fandom to his New York City (sorry, no luck for you, Robin) and so could blissfully oversee the gathering of guests, students, teachers, and townies happening in the park. The day was bright and sunny, regardless of what any weather reports might claim.

The Student Council had done a nice job getting things together to greet the visitors. A wide variety of sumptuous food was spread out on long tables at one end of the park. In the center were plenty of comfortable blue and gold tables and chairs perfect for sitting, chatting, and eating. To the other end of he park was the registration table where visitors could sign in and pickup their name tags.

Just above the registration area was a gaudy banner announcing the start of a calm and relaxing weekend. Okay, a weekend where Barney got a lot of popcorn to listen to radio.

"Well, yes," Claire said. "He's great and I definitely want you to meet him. But... this school. It's... different. And it's totally safe here. But I'm afraid if Daddy found out about some of the more unusual things, he'd make me leave."

She wasn't surprised to hear about a boy. After all, Claire was a teenaged girl. But the idea of unusual things made Sandra nervous. They'd dealt with enough already. "What kind of unusual things?"

"Nothing scary, I promise," Claire said. "How was your trip?"

"Nothing scary. That's wonderful," Sandra answered. "Don't try to distract me by asking about my trip young lady. What kind of things?"

"Okay, okay," Claire said with a sigh. "There are a lot of people here with abilities," she said. "And most of the are open about it because this is a safe place."

Sandra didn't hear much beyond 'abilities'. "Claire we sent you here to get away from that. What if there's another Sylar here?"

"Mom, there's not."

And, wow, she really hoped they didn't run into Spock.

"Trust me, okay? You know that if I thought there was a danger here, I would have told you and Daddy."

"Would you? Like you told us about what was happening to you?" Someone might still have been a bit hurt, even after all that time.

Claire sighed. "I didn't want to lie about that. I was just scared."

"We're your parents sweetheart, no matter what, we'll always love you." Sandra paused for a moment, resisting the instinctive urge to tell Claire to go pack her bags. "Tell me why you should stay. Why this place is so much better then coming back to California?"

"Because I can be myself here," Claire said. "Without worrying about the Company tracking me down."

"How can you be so certain of that?" she asked. "What's to stop them from coming in and taking you and anyone else they want?"

"The people here won't let that happen, Mom," Claire said. "I really am safe here."

"The people here? What are they all? Trained soldiers or something? I thought this was a high school."

"It is," Claire said. "But there are people here who know how to defend themselves against threats like the Company. I'm safe here and I'm learning to defend myself."

"You're a teen-aged girl Claire," Sandra pointed out. "You're not supposed to have to defend yourself."

"I know that, Mom," she said. "But even if I was at home I might have to if the Company found me."

As much as she hated to admit it, Claire had a point, even if Noah wouldn't agree. "Maybe. But I'm still not sure. And I know what your father would say."

"Yeah, me too, that's why you can't tell him," Claire said. "Please, Mom? I'm happy here. Really happy here."

"Let me think about it," Sandra offered. "And talk to some of your teachers. I want to know that it really is a safe place for you."

"Okay! We can go and meet Miss Bennet, no relation," Claire said. "And, uh, Dr. Suresh. They can reassure you."

She hoped. And she would not be taking her mom to meet Deadpool under any circumstances.

"It's going to take a lot of reassuring," she warned.

"I can take you to meet Principal Winchester tomorrow," Claire offered.

Sandra nodded, satisfied for them moment. It was time to move on to more normal mother-daughter conversations.

"So tell me about the boy you met."

Claire grinned. "His name is Jon and he's from Colorado and he's really nice. You can meet his dad while you're here. He lives in town."

She made a mental note to call Jack and beg him to roll with the dad thing.
