Parents' Weekend Meet & Greet, Town Park [Friday Afternoon]

Barney was smart and had purposefully blocked all outgoing mail from Fandom to his New York City (sorry, no luck for you, Robin) and so could blissfully oversee the gathering of guests, students, teachers, and townies happening in the park. The day was bright and sunny, regardless of what any weather reports might claim.

The Student Council had done a nice job getting things together to greet the visitors. A wide variety of sumptuous food was spread out on long tables at one end of the park. In the center were plenty of comfortable blue and gold tables and chairs perfect for sitting, chatting, and eating. To the other end of he park was the registration table where visitors could sign in and pickup their name tags.

Just above the registration area was a gaudy banner announcing the start of a calm and relaxing weekend. Okay, a weekend where Barney got a lot of popcorn to listen to radio.
Welcome to Parents' Weekend 2009!

Jack beamed. It was always good to have Sebastien admit he was better at anything, even something as trivial as knowing his own hometown.

"Caritas, perhaps," he decided. "It's the tavern. There ought to be an ... interesting assortment of people there, one would hope."

Lowering his voice and switching to Greek, he added, //Remember that there are others of the blood here, though they're from different worlds. They should be friendly -- but do be careful.//

There was no indication that Sebastien had heard this for a moment before there was a quick, almost imperceptible nod.

He was always careful.

"It sounds" like someplace that Jack would like where he'd get most of his enjoyment from watching the young man have his own good time "perfect. A place is only as good as those who inhabit it."

And he liked the name. He also liked Jack's smile. He would not say that he had missed it, but that shouldn't be mistaken for the truth.

"Talking in proverbs again," Jack said, with distinctly feigned exasperation. He'd missed the proverbs as much as Sebastien had missed his smile, and wouldn't deny it nearly as fiercely.

"But true, in this case. It's -- well, it has the advantage of being the only place on the island that serves alcohol. Should draw quite the mix tonight. You're welcome to go to the school to meet my teachers as well -- though Professor Atreides is likely to be the only one that would interest you."

He was wrong, of course, but Nick Chevalier was very subtle.

"Tell me about them?" he asked leisurely. Of course, he had received information in letters, but it was something to talk about and now he would have the opportunity for questions if he so desired to ask them. Jack usually provided a succinct report, but it was in the nature of partnerships for one to catch that which the other had missed and vice versa.

"Your teachers, I mean."

In case he wasn't clear.

"Well, I only have three at the moment," Jack said thoughtfully. "Professor Atriedes teaches religion. She's royalty from another planet -- her brother is in my year, but I think I'd have picked up on the nobility even if I hadn't met Leto." He looked at Sebastien wryly. "Technically, he's her twin though he's five years younger now. The time travel at this school does strange things."

"Anyhow, she's very bright. We did a feast for the end of Ramadan class before last, and last class was, of course, about Yom Kippur and atonement."

[is very annoyed that LJ ate this tag because she really liked it before it was eaten]

The mention of Yom Kippur curled the end of his lips just a little. It mattered not a whit to him, of course, but he knew that the rites and rules of his heritage were important to Jack, if perhaps for reasons that were only his own.

"I shall have to stop in, if she is still in her office after sundown."

And, if asked, Jack would say he practiced in part because he thought Sebastien expected it of him. It was one of the things they did not discuss.

"You ought to," Jack said. "Tomorrow, if not today. The other two are Castle and Chevalier -- literature and art. You might like the art teacher, actually, he seems fairly educated in his field."

Which meant Jack hadn't caught him in any errors just yet.

The names amused him.

"A knight, a castle, and a princess," he pointed out with a soft smile.

"Greeting your instructors should be very entertaining indeed."
