Parents' Weekend Meet & Greet, Town Park [Friday Afternoon]

Barney was smart and had purposefully blocked all outgoing mail from Fandom to his New York City (sorry, no luck for you, Robin) and so could blissfully oversee the gathering of guests, students, teachers, and townies happening in the park. The day was bright and sunny, regardless of what any weather reports might claim.

The Student Council had done a nice job getting things together to greet the visitors. A wide variety of sumptuous food was spread out on long tables at one end of the park. In the center were plenty of comfortable blue and gold tables and chairs perfect for sitting, chatting, and eating. To the other end of he park was the registration table where visitors could sign in and pickup their name tags.

Just above the registration area was a gaudy banner announcing the start of a calm and relaxing weekend. Okay, a weekend where Barney got a lot of popcorn to listen to radio.

With an almost throw-away glare, Karla stepped around him. "Leto, may I please introduce you to Prince Saetan Daemon SaDiablo, my adopted uncle?" She had decided to forgo his usual list of titles, since they'd be there all day if she didn't. "And this," her voice took on a slightly more annoyed tone, "is my cousin, Lord Morton. Uncle Saetan, Morton, this is Prince Leto Atreides. He is my friend and is teaching me many useful skills."

"Karla has told me about you both," he said. "It's never easy to be away from one's family."

Morton nodded slightly. "Prince?" he repeated, eyebrow quirked. He didn't sense the particular scent that signified a Warlord Prince, but that didn't necessarily mean anything here.

"Thank you for watching out for my cousin," he offered Leto, extending a hand. It was as much a warning that Leto had better watch out for his cousin as it was an actual expression of gratitude.

"There are all sorts of titles that the Blood share with the people of this Realm," Karla explained wryly, remembering just how confused she'd been when she'd gotten here. "Here, Prince just means 'son of the current ruler.'" She grimaced. "There are several such males wandering around. Though I have no doubt that Leto would be a Prince in Kaeleer, too."

Probably not a Warlord Prince, but definitely a Prince.

"Yes, and there are quite a few different cultures represented, to add to the confusion," Leto grinned at Karla.

He shook Morton's hand, ignoring that the man didn't trust him. From what Karla had told him, it was her cousin's duty to protect her, and he was clearly taking this seriously.

"Now, I suppose you want to hear all the details about what she's been up to," he added, looking quite serious.

Morton's expression and demeanor both brightened considerably at that suggestion. "Why, that sounds like a marvelous way to spend some time."

Leto, you traitor.

"Or not," Karla said just as brightly. "Why don't we spend some time discussing the culture differences instead? Or watching the grass grow? Or...anything?"

But Karla, it was auch a great way to win his trust! Male bonding!

"I didn't know you took such an interest in that," he replied teasingly. "Or have you been too busy?" He turned to Morton. "Is there anything in particular you want to know?"

There were certain formalities to be observed so Morton began with those. "Has she been eating enough, resting enough, staying out of the sort of trouble that could get her killed?" Not out of trouble generally. This was Karla.

After he had the answers to those, Morton could ask the more interesting ones.

"Yes, yes, of course, and shut up." Karla answered hastily. The 'shut up' was for the comment he didn't actually have to say.

[I've gotta run for a bit. Feel free to go back and forth while I'm gone. I'll ping her in when I get back.]

"Eating enough? I have a feeling she forgets when she's busy. Resting enough? That would depend on your definition of enough, but I doubt it. As for lethal danger, I think she's managed to avoid it, and fortunately there are quite a few of us here who would try to stop her from that."

[And I need to sleep now]

Morton shot Karla a glare, but it faded into a sigh. "So... pretty much normal Karla behavior, huh?"

"I always eat enough!" Karla protested.

...She couldn't actually comment about the other two. In fact, she was just happy Leto hadn't mentioned the Reserves.

"Huh." That was the sound of Morton knowing his cousin and being very doubtful.

Saetan had returned from fetching a glass of water in time to hear Karla's protest. Pretending he had not heard, Saetan gestured towards the plate of food in her hand. "Have you been eating enough, Karla?"

Karla huffed, looking a lot like a disgruntled kitten. "Yes," she grumbled, holding up the plate. "See?" she said. "Eating."

"All I see is a plate," Morton teased.

"That's because I ate everything on it!" Karla said, rolling her eyes.

Leto didn't even bother to hide a grin. "But as the proof is gone, how can we be sure?" he teased her.

Saetan didn't want to question the exact nature of the 'useful skills' this Leto was teaching his adopted niece.

"And she has told me nothing about you," Saetan replied softly, almost dangerously.

Leto studied the man for a moment, a careful smile on his face. "Karla has many friends here, and I'm not the most important one to her. But yes, I teach her to fight with knives. It's a highly valued skill among my people." And as always, he was carrying his crysknife, to confirm the last statement.

There was something about Leto's stance that reminded Saetan of a Kaeleeran warrior. Saetan returned the smile, but it was a vicious curl of his lips. "And has she been instructed in using such skills against...other males?"

"I leave the choice of target for Karla," Leto replied calmly, meeting the other man's eyes. "She's a Queen, is she not?"
