Parents' Weekend Meet & Greet, Town Park [Friday Afternoon]

Barney was smart and had purposefully blocked all outgoing mail from Fandom to his New York City (sorry, no luck for you, Robin) and so could blissfully oversee the gathering of guests, students, teachers, and townies happening in the park. The day was bright and sunny, regardless of what any weather reports might claim.

The Student Council had done a nice job getting things together to greet the visitors. A wide variety of sumptuous food was spread out on long tables at one end of the park. In the center were plenty of comfortable blue and gold tables and chairs perfect for sitting, chatting, and eating. To the other end of he park was the registration table where visitors could sign in and pickup their name tags.

Just above the registration area was a gaudy banner announcing the start of a calm and relaxing weekend. Okay, a weekend where Barney got a lot of popcorn to listen to radio.

Beka looked thoughtful. "I'll try," she promised, "but you'll have to help." For one thing, she'd wasn't certain what nilla was.

"I'ma good helper!" Gabriel declared with a wave of his hand. "I helped at homes too! Gotta help to make things work!"

"I believe you," Beka said with a nod and she straightened up, meeting Jonas' eyes.

"I don't think you'll be having much of a choice now," she said. Not quite apologetic. She was in favor of trying new things.

"I don't mind," Jonas said, giving both Gabriel and Beka a smile. "He's been trying to get me to try a different flavor for awhile. So far, I've been resistant. We'll see if I continue to manage."

"We shall," she winked at Gabriel.

Twas then she noticed her Lord returning from the food table, looking around for her. "I'll be a moment," she excused herself and slipped past Jonas and Gabriel.

When she returned, Lord Gershom was with her. "My Lord, I'd like you to meet one of my friends here. This is Jonas and his little brother Gabriel. Jonas, this is Lord Provost Gershom of Haryse."

Beka's formality even here was amusing him, but he didn't correct her. "It's a pleasure to meet you both, Jonas and Gabriel," Lord Gershom inclined his head towards the both of him. His clothes spoke of wealth and stature and from his belt hung a sword and knife.

"And you, sir," Jonas said, unable to really return the bow with Gabriel in his arms but he made a sincere attempt while trying to subtly take in the different clothes, the weapons at his belt and anything else that was unfamiliar to him. "I'm glad you could come to the event today."

Gabriel, for his part, was having nothing of formality. "Hi!" It was a loud, boisterous word and accompanied by a frantic wave. "'M Gabe!"

Lord Gershom chuckled. He didn't care much for formality either way. "It's good to meet you too, Master Gabe.

To Jonas he continued. "I'm glad I could find the time as well. I make it a point not to pass up an opportunity to discover something new." And it would make Beka fidget less if she stopped thinking he travelled this way just for her alone.

"It's good reason to to travel," Jonas agreed with another slight grin. "This is only the third place I've been in any sort of permanent manner and I'm still adjusting to the differences. I don't even want to think about traveling unless it's to the mainland and someone's with me to make sure I don't get lost."

"It's wise to take precautions," Lord Gershom agreed, but he'd come along to the island as well and he was looking thoughtful now. Obviously, thinking of something that his Lady wouldn't approve of. "Have either of you been to the mainland?"

Beka shook her head. "I've not so far," she said. Twas on her list.

"No, sir," he said, shaking his head. "I'm still acclimating myself to the island and it's surroundings. I haven't even thought about going to the mainland yet. I'm sure I might get to it eventually but I like to know the area around me first."

Lord Gershom nodded. "Sensible," he approved. "And will your brother be attending this school too?"

"I'm only three!" Gabe exclaimed, holding up three small fingers. "I dun need school yet!"

Jonas waited till Gabe had finished, laughed and said, "It hasn't been discussed as such, sir. This is the first time I've attended a new school so I'm really just a test subject in that regard. If it turns out all right, perhaps Gabriel will attend when he's older."

"I stand corrected, Master Gabe," Lord Gershom said with a low chuckle.

"So what let you to this school, Jonas?" he asked. "If I can be so curious."

"You can," Jonas said, already working his memories into how best to explain how he'd come to be here. "Where I was previously was no longer...what I needed. I decided I needed a change and this was both a change and a challenge."

Jonas knew it was vague but describing the Community without making it sound cruel and unforgiving was a hard task at the best of times.

"And from what Beka has told me so far, this place is very well a challenge," Lord Gershom agreed. "In particular with its technologies."

"Yes," he said, letting out a laugh to show his agreement with that. "I just learned how to use a toaster the other day. And that didn't stop me from nearly ruining the appliance by trying to put crackers in its slots."

"It's sommat they use to prepare bread in a certain matter," Beka explained as Lord Gershom shot her a questioning look. "I've not eaten crackers yet."

"They're crumbly," Jonas provided as best he could. "And they weren't meant for the toaster. Toasters are usually used for bread. It hardens the bread and turns it slightly brown."

"Curious," Lord Gershom decided to add this toaster to the things of items he wanted to see. "I'll be having a busy weekend, it seems. It's been nice meeting you, Jonas. Master Gabe."

"And you as well, sir," Jonas said and then prompted Gabriel who waved excitedly again and gave Lord Gershom a wide smile. "I hope your visit is a good one."

"Thank you," Lord Gershom give Jonas and Gabriel a smile. "Perhaps I shall meet you again before I leave."

Beka chuckled and smiled broadly at Gabriel. "I will see you again for that ice cream," she promised.
