Parents' Weekend Meet & Greet, Town Park [Friday Afternoon]

Barney was smart and had purposefully blocked all outgoing mail from Fandom to his New York City (sorry, no luck for you, Robin) and so could blissfully oversee the gathering of guests, students, teachers, and townies happening in the park. The day was bright and sunny, regardless of what any weather reports might claim.

The Student Council had done a nice job getting things together to greet the visitors. A wide variety of sumptuous food was spread out on long tables at one end of the park. In the center were plenty of comfortable blue and gold tables and chairs perfect for sitting, chatting, and eating. To the other end of he park was the registration table where visitors could sign in and pickup their name tags.

Just above the registration area was a gaudy banner announcing the start of a calm and relaxing weekend. Okay, a weekend where Barney got a lot of popcorn to listen to radio.

It was very important to regulate Bobby's caffeine intake. Warren smirked faintly as he let that sink in some.

Yep, that sounded about right.

"Tell me their Americano is good?"

"I don't even know what that is," Bobby admitted. A coffee snob he was not. "They do pretty good business, though, so I guess it must be?" They were also one of the few coffee-serving places on an island full of teenagers. Of course they did good business.

"I might have to make a point to check it-" and any coffee-shop-going girls, "-out while I'm still here, then."

A pause.

"So. There are plenty of pretty girls, and the coffee's good. Sounds like you really managed to hit the jackpot here, didn't you?"

"There's a reason I asked if I could stay beyond summer camp," Bobby admitted. "I mean, I miss you guys like hell but-" he trailed off.

And Warren was almost willing to settle for that, too.

Almost.

"What is it about this place? I mean, really? You keep pretty vague about specifics when you do keep in touch. I thought it might be a girl, when you sent that e-mail with those attachments..."

That girl had been very hot.

Oh, way to make Bobby nearly choke to death on the bite of sandwich he was trying to eat, Warren.

"Oh god no," he managed finally. "It's not that." Okay, well, there was a girl. Or um, three.

Three girls were totally better than one! Better than oneself, at that!

"Well, then what is it?"

Because it was starting to drive Warren a little loopy, here.

"Okay, first? Nobody's trying to kill us every week. I mean, The Blob's here, and that's weird, but he's not causing trouble or anything, so mostly I'm trying to ignore him. But the not-getting-attacked? Big point in the plus column."

... Fair enough.

"Okay," Warren relented. "I can definitely see the draw in that, yes."

"Also," he fidgeted a bit, shifting his weight from foot to foot. "I um. Maaay have told a couple of people about the ice thing? And nobody's freaked out on me."

And now Warren was wondering why the heck he wasn't going to this school. Seriously.

"You did? They didn't?" He squinted a bit. "You're not just pulling my leg, here, are you?"

"No!" Bobby said emphatically. "I mean, I'm not going around introducing myself as Bobby Drake, aka the Iceman, mutant with sweet-ass ice powers, or anything. But yeah, I've mentioned the mutant thing."

"And people here are fine with it...?" Okay, and that was a wistful sort of look, almost, coming from the kid with the wings.

"Are any of them... you know? Different, too?"

Please, say yes. Say that all of the pretty girls are mutants as well, and you're going to write home to Xavier to let him know that we need them all on the team, like, yesterday.

"There's a couple other mutants here," Bobby nodded. "And- some people with powers, but they're not mutants. Or maybe they are, but that's not what they're called where they're from. It's weird."

"Yeah, that does sound pretty weird." A pause. "Where they're from?"

This wasn't like those other realities, was it? Like the one that drove Bobby here in the first place? Wary Warren was wary.

"Sookie's from Louisiana," Bobby offered. "But it's not the Louisiana we know. They have vampires there."

Warren stared at Bobby for a moment, thinking on that.

"That sounds like something right out of an Anne Rice novel," he noted. "Not that I've ever read any. And stuff like that happens fairly often, here?"

Sure he hadn't. Bobby was so checking under Warren's bed next time he went home.

"Well, I wouldn't say vampires happen fairly often," he replied, deliberately misinterpreting the question.

That was going to earn Bobby a look. And Warren was a Worthington, thank you very much. Looks like that one ran in the blood.

"Different versions of the same place," he clarified. Because he had to, yes.

Being unclear with Bobby always led to smartass answers. It was a law of the universe.

"Yeah," Bobby nodded. "This... is probably the part where I should mention there's a Jean here, right?"

"A Jean?" Well, it was a kind of popular name and all...

Look, let him sit in denial for a moment. He kind of had to.

"Grey," Bobby clarified. "Redhead, mind-movey powers, totally turned you down in favor of Scott?"

"I could have gone without that reminder," Warren noted, rolling his eyes. "So, the same Jean. But not our Jean?"

His head was starting to hurt.

"Really, really not," Bobby nodded. "Jean 2.0 is from bizarro world. Where you're old."

... Wait, what?

"But she's still our age?"

Now his head really hurt.
