Winter Carnival | All Day | The Park | January 31 [Post #1]

It was a new day and there was no better way to start a new day than with the continuation of the carnival. There was still snow coating the ground but the atmosphere was as lively as ever. With cream-colored decorations and twinkling lights, the Student Council had aimed for a winter wonderland kind of theme, and the snow simply added to the effect. Thankfully, the day was turning out to be warmer, so those who were going to be outside all day wouldn't freeze. Once the finishing touches were done, the carnival was open for business.

"A man of action is often far better than a man of word," Mina remarked. "After all, words can end up hollow and meaningless. Actions, they always have resonance."

"Is that so?"

Pardon him for a moment. He had this nagging thought that perhaps she was hinting at something, here, and so he was going to have to demonstrate that he was, in fact, a man of action. By leaning forward to kiss her.

Nathan Algren was nothing if not a man of action.

Mina had not been hinting at all, this time. In fact, she was more making a comment on the sort of men she preferred in her life.

There was no objection to the kiss, though. Indeed, she found it rather appropriate, given where they were. She gently cupped his face in her other hand, happy in that moment.

And there was kissing, and Nathan saw that it was good.

And when the kiss was finished, he smiled at her, giving the had that he'd been holding a light squeeze.

"Definitely better than the fudge," he decided.

"Perhaps we can stop for ice cream after our time at the carnival," Mina said. "And we can enjoy the hot fudge how God intended."

She was rather pleased at the moment, all things considered.

"An excellent idea, if ever there was one," he decided. See? She absolutely did have better ideas than he did.

... He was still vaguely curious about the fudge wrestling. In a terrible sort of way.

Probably a good thing that Nathan went along with most of her ideas, as well.

"And then you could escort me home," she said. "An acceptable close of the day, indeed."

"That certainly sounds like a plan, to me," Nathan replied, smiling and leaning back into the seat.

And if he was snaking an arm around her shoulder, would there be any problem with that at all?

"In the meantime, Ms. Murray, we appear to still be alone in a dark tunnel."

"I believe that is the point of all this," Mina said. "The tunnel of cheap thrills would probably be a more apt name of this contraption."

She wasn't complaining, just stating an observation. The company made whatever... impropriety she felt all the more enticing rather than appalling.

"For the contraption itself," Nathan agreed. And that? That was absolutely a glint of mischief in his eye, there. "The point, I suppose, is for the people riding to make the thrills decidedly less cheap."

"I find any thrills with you, sir, are hardly cheap," Mina said, trying to take a tiny bit of a high road. "Gentleman or not, you are dignified to say the least."

Nathan never had been one to know what to do with a compliment, really.

"You would take that back in a heartbeat, if you'd seen me in my younger days," he decided.

Nathan, the proper response to that would have been 'thank you,' and then some appropriate flattery in turn. Silly man.

"I'm not sure why you insist on making this so difficult, sir," Mina said, harrumphing just a little. "I do believe we are not in the tunnel of refusing to accept anything good said about ourselves."

And here? Here would be where Nathan really should have smiled and relented and accepted the compliment that she'd given him, with an apology for being so difficult.

"You're beautiful," he blurted, instead.

Where was the fun in doing what he was supposed to do, right?

While Mina was really no one to judge about self image, she was, at least, going to let this one pass. For now.

"Thank you," she said, pleased at least for the compliment if not for the fact it was being used as a distraction. "Though I have to wonder how much you can see in the dark."

She could see just fine in the dark, admittedly.

Meanwhile, he was a samurai. And, while he might have spent several months in Japan learning how to pay closer attention to things with the senses that he did have, he was still only human.

"It isn't too dark in here," he decided, stubborn man that he was. "And unless you mysteriously change shape when all light flees the area, then I believe the compliment still stands."

"Perhaps you'll have to inspect for yourself," Mina said, a little bold. "But in a place far more private."

This was a falsely private area, for what Mina was concerned.

Her boldness was met with a smile, and possibly the lightest touch of redness to Nathan's cheeks as he worked out his reply.

"Perhaps I will," he agreed. "It seems like far too important a matter to leave to the whims of speculation, after all."

And he liked being proven right. Among other things.

"Then perhaps," Mina said, a smile on her own face. "We shall skip the ice cream and cut straight to the escorting me home."

"Ice cream is terribly overrated, isn't it?"

They had, it would seem, a plan.
