Winter Carnival | All Day | The Park | January 31 [Post #1]

It was a new day and there was no better way to start a new day than with the continuation of the carnival. There was still snow coating the ground but the atmosphere was as lively as ever. With cream-colored decorations and twinkling lights, the Student Council had aimed for a winter wonderland kind of theme, and the snow simply added to the effect. Thankfully, the day was turning out to be warmer, so those who were going to be outside all day wouldn't freeze. Once the finishing touches were done, the carnival was open for business.

Jonas leaned a little closer and peered at her tongue. "It looks lightly yellow. I think it's working!"

"Eat more of yours!" Karla urged. "Just not too quick, or you'll get a headache," she amended. "Lick more, too. It'll get more of it on your tongue!"

"Headache?" Jonas asked, going to heed her advice by eating slower and licking. "Why would I get a headache?"

"It comes from eating ice cream or other cold things too quickly," Karla explained. It was a question that often came up with apprentice Healers, actually, usually after their first trip to get ice cream after training has begun. "The blood vessels in the roof of your mouth constrict from the cold and then swell back up very quickly. Since your face is a nerve-heavy area, the rapid dilation is read as pain."

She grinned at him. "Take a mouthful and hold it on your tongue until it melts. That'll give your palate time to get used to the cold."

Jonas didn't immediately do what she said because he was too busy...staring at that explanation and subtly sliding his tongue along the roof of his mouth.

"That sounds painful," he said, wincing.

His response would have to wait a moment, as Karla swallowed her melted bite of Sno-Cone. "It only hurts for like half a minute," she said. "Though, with pain, time gets all funny. Overall, not too bad--though I'd be a bad friend if I didn't warn you, right?"

"Thank you for the warning," he said and finally did take a mouthful, careful not to chew. He let it melt, feeling the cold eventually turn to warm and the flavor become more apparent. "I'm not a big fan of pain in any sort of way."

"Very few people do, I've noticed," Karla said before taking another bite of her Sno-Cone. "You know I'm a Healer, right? If you do end up hurt or sick or something, you come find me. I'll Heal you up, right as rain."

"You've told me before," he said, nodding. "Sometimes I feel like I should experience pain, though. I never had to when I was growing up so I don't have the memories."

Karla grimaced. "Pain is important. It's your body telling you that something is wrong. And it's important to be able to distinguish between pain that is really sending an important message and pain that's ephemeral, like an ice cream headache. But don't go overboard, okay? You don't have...anything to prove, or anything."

"Oh, I know," he assured her, nodding. "I know, don't worry. Back home, I smashed my finger in a door once. It was bloody and painful but I was given medicine that made it feel better almost at once. I just want to learn that not everything can be solved that quickly."

"That's a good lesson to learn," Karla said, nodding. "Though hard, annoying, and frequently frustrating."

She stuck out her tongue. "How 'bout now?" she asked.

"Colorful," Jonas said approvingly. "Is mine purple?" He stuck out his own tongue.

"It is!" Karla said, clapping her hands. "Holding that bit on your tongue must have really helped. Here." She called in a small hand mirror and held it up, so Jonas could see for himself. "Don't you feel more edified now?" she asked with a laugh.

"If I didn't know any better, I'd be worried," he laughed, peering at his purple tongue and laughing. "And spend all night in my books, trying to find a sickness that matches this symptom."

"Looks like a beginning case of younglingitis to me," Karla said sagely, leaning in to examine his tongue again. "Not too bad, nothing to do but let it run its course. A prescription of running, laughing, playing, and eating sweets is recommended."

"So, I can be assured that my tongue won't stay purple?" Jonas asked, snickering. "Too bad, I'd almost want to see that. It'd be a good story to tell."

"A good teeth-scrubbing later, and it should be normal," Karla teased. "So, there's one way you can get it to stay, but I don't think anyone will be willing to stand near while you explain."

[identity profile] see-beyond.livejournal.com 2010-02-02 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
"I don't think I'd want to stand near me then," Jonas said, making a face. "I promise to give my teeth a goods scrubbing later. As fun as a purple tongue is, I wouldn't want it to be permanent if it drove everyone away."

"Wise male," Karla said, winking. "Have you tried other carnival treats yet? There are so many good ones, even if they don't change the color of your tongue."

She shivered a bit. A Sno-Cone really wasn't the best wintertime treat. "We could get cider? Oh! And fritters! And maybe some friend dough."

Now Karla seemed intent on teaching Jonas about bellyaches.

"I had a funnel cake," he shared, nodding in the direction of that booth. "And Beka suggested apple fritters so I had one of those too."

Amazing that he didn't get stomachaches more often.

"I haven't had the cider yet," he said, shaking his head and looking interested. "Or the fried dough. I want to try everything."

"Me too!"

Never mind that she already had tried everything yesterday. She wanted to try it all again.

"Cider first?" she suggested. "You can get it mulled or cold, but the mulled cider will keep us warm as we wait in line for the rest. My treat! It's for your education."

Re: Tables and Chairs [WC 01/31]

[identity profile] see-beyond.livejournal.com 2010-02-02 08:24 pm (UTC)(link)
"Mulled it is," Jonas said, nodding. "Lead the way. I look forward to the experience."

Karla headed over to the table set up with warm drinks and ladled them out big cups of mulled cider. "I don't know if you've had regular cider," she said, passing his cup over, "but mulled means it's been warmed and spiced. Usually nutmeg, cinnamon, and cloves, with a bit of something zesty in it to keep it refreshing, like a bit of orange or lemon."

She took a sip of hers and smiled. "I feel warmer already," she said, cradling her cup in her hands. "Now for refreshments. See anything you particularly want to try?"

Jonas cradled the cup loosely in one hand, eyes scanning over the various foods. He actually had no clue what he wanted mostly because a lot of these weren't familiar.

"I actually don't know," he admitted, shrugging. Eventually, his eyes found that popcorn. "Perhaps that?"
