Prom, Community Center, Friday Evening

It was possible that the strange creatures that had invaded Fandom last week were still on everyone's mind when the Student Council had designed the decorations for Prom. Glittery cardboard animal-hybrid monsters awaited everyone as they arrived to the community center, and made their way inside along a blue and yellow carpet flanked by glowing, glittery red eyes.

Nothing in the decorations looked like a rabbit though. Some memories were just too much to make fun of.

Kathy nearly asked if he was dressed to get laid by two people tonight, but realized how that might have sounded. She just smiled and shrugged. "I dunno," she said instead. "By the time I get out of all this stuff, the moment might be gone."

But she'd thought it was a lovely gown and it showed off her legs a lot so she was happy with it.

"Maybe next major dance, I'll try for something a little more punk rock, just for convenience sake." She eyed his pants. "Not that those were made for ease of putting on or taking off."

Dante snickered. "Maybe next time I'll bring a skirt," he mused.

"And boots," Kathy said. "With a big heel. They'll make your legs look amazing."

Kathy stuck her own leg out for emphasis, wearing her lacy heeled shoes.

"How the fuck do you stay upright on those things?" Dante wondered, tilting his head to check them out.

Kathy lifted her leg so he could get a better look at her shoes, standing steadily on only one foot. "Super-balance," she said with a shrug. "I can do a ridiculous number of things in heels without toppling over."

She wrinkled her nose. "Though nothing can make them comfortable." As soon as the dance was over, she was taking these off.

"Gotta work on that," Dante said, patting the upright leg to signal it could go down.

That was mostly the reason, anyway. "How long are you guys planning to hang around?"

"I dunno," Kathy said, as she brought her leg back down to the floor. "Probably until court is announced, at least?" She tossed a fond smile over to where Anders was standing. "This is pretty much his show; I'm just happy to have the chance to attend. I don't...have an agenda for tonight. Figured I'd go with the flow."

You know, for timing and stuff. Totally not anything bigger than that, really.

Dante considered that.

He reached into his coat after a moment, pulling out his flask of homemade, glittery booze. "For good luck," he said, holding it out for her.

Kathy thought about bringing hers out to toast him with, but Eliot was right there and she felt guilty.

...But not guilty enough to turn down the drink. "For good luck," she repeated, and took a swig. "You're in the running for court, too, right?" She dimpled at him, passing the flask back over. "I bet you'll win."

"Eh, I won like two times and it didn't get me any more or less laid," Dante said, snickering. "Mostly I wanna know if Anders is gonna win anything. His ego might be into it."

He took a swig from the flask - and its incredibly sweet contents - too.

"How could it get you more laid?" Kathy asked. "Contrary to what athlete's promise, you can't actually go over a hundred percent."

She waited until he wasn't drinking anymore to nudge him with her elbow. "And, c'mon, whether he wins or loses, do you really think that's going to change Anders' chances of getting laid?"

By either of them?

"Still, I'm hoping he wins, too. He deserves it."

"I'm not sure there's anybody in this room who's got a better shot at getting laid," Dante allowed, eyeing Anders from a distance. "But he might care about the parts of it that aren't about that."

Beat.

"A little. Like five percent of caring."

"For a minute, I wasn't sure if you remembered who you were talking about," Kathy snorted, hand out to ask for the flask again. "Hey, listen...I'm really glad that he asked me to prom. It really meant a lot to me. I don't know what the after-prom plans are, but if you two already had something in mind, that's okay."

Dante blinked. Then he shrugged, bringing his flask up for another sip. "No plans," he said. "I'm just winging it tonight. I know you care about this prom shit a lot more than I do, so I'm not gonna get in the way if you want the full prom night experience."

"I had it," Kathy said, wordlessly asking for the flask again. "Anders brought me a prom last year, too. So, I'm just saying, I won't complain if I'm asked to step off."

Dante rolled his eyes, passing her the flask. "I'm not asking you to step off."

She would have rolled her eyes back but, hey, flask.

"What's in this?" she asked, taking another sip. "Besides sparkles and sugar?"

"Rum," Dante supplied. "Maybe a little vodka..."

"Did you mix it with strawberry kool-aid, too?" Kathy asked, drinking deep before handing the flask back. "It almost tastes like drinking lollipops."

"A little bit," Dante said, grinning. "But just a touch."

More than a touch.

"Dante, Kool-aid connoisseur," Kathy snorted. "My guess is that you put the package of kool-aid and the cup of sugar in, and then just added however much booze would fit in the flask."

"Nah, I had to make sure the glitter worked out, too," Dante said, smirking at her. "Maybe we should just see how the night works out and take it from there."

"Pretty sure edible glitter is made out of sugar," Kathy pointed out. "But yeah. Seeing how the night goes sounds like a good idea to me."

"I don't know, I didn't check," Dante said. He poked Kathy gently in the hip. "Maybe we'll just say fuck it and all go."

"That sounds like it'd be a lot of fun," Kathy agreed. Because everything else aside, including her own awkwardness, she liked the guys. Liked hanging out with them, spending time with them. She'd missed it.

Trying to hipcheck his poking finger, she added, "I mean, it's that or I try to convince you guys that it would be fun to go play on the playground in promwear."
