It was that time of year again! New people were here! New people to date, get to know, or perhaps make a mortal enemy of!

You never know.

Signs were hung up in front of the bar, both obviously, and easy to miss for anyone who might wander in and get signed up without their knowledge. Above the bar was a banner (in glitter):

TONIGHT!
THREE MINUTE DATES!
GOOD LUCK WBRURBODY

Your hostess wasn't gonna question it. And a few minutes before 8:00, she took the stage.

"Hello, everyone! And welcome to Three Minute Dates!" Kitty greeted them. "If you're new to this, the rules are simple. We call your name along with one other person. You talk to this person, get to know their likes, their loves, their dreams. After three minutes, a buzzer will sound-" Pause for the sound. "-and you'll hear your name paired with a different person. Et cetera. If there is anyone you'd like to talk to more, the bar will be open afterwards for drinks and conversation. Remember that any violence will get you transported into the pond, but also please don't attempt violence in order to flee, that is rude to the rest of your dates. Now I'm going to get off the stage. Have fun, and good luck..."

She trailed off, not going to attempt to pronounce the word on that sign.

TJ sighed and rolled her eyes. Yes, Fandom, she got it.

"Okay, definitely not dating you. We are not that kind of family."

Kurt, for a split second debated just noping out of this on and turning around- to save them both the awkwardness. But no, that wouldn't be fair.

"Yeah ok def just a social thing," Kurt said with a small nod of agreement as he sat down. "Maybe though... it's not so bad. A chance to get to know each other a little better?" he asked hopefully.

"...Yeah, okay." TJ shrugged. "You came to New York when you were a kid. That's weird; my dad didn't till he was older. You get tired of the circus?"

"My folks send me. They thought I would be happier and safer with The Professor and rest of the students" Kurt explained. "They didn't want me to feel so different and isolated."

Kurt paused as his head tilted to the side as he thought for a moment. "So wait... Kurt.. I mean... I..." ok this was still making his head hurt. "Your dad was part of a circus?"

"He grew up with them," TJ said. "Wait, your folks? You weren't raised by Margali?"

Kurt shook his head. OK so... the timelines/realities/whatever seemed to be more distant than they thought.

"I was adopted. My folks raised me from the day they found me abandoned by a river. I still talk to them now and then..." which he had to make a mental note to send a reply letter and some more photos soon.

"So...." Kurt started as he looked over at TJ a little uncertainly. "What.. what is it like living with the X-Men. I mean, your version of them at least.

"It's nice, I guess," TJ said, shrugging. "They're my family; I love them and I miss them. It'd be nice if fewer people attacked us all the time, though. You? What's Professor Xavier like?"

"Ah yeah, guess that's a commonality no matter what... endless versions of "oh no its a mutant" or "run them out of town" Kurt said with a somewhat annoyed sigh. "But The Professor is really cool. It was his idea that I come to Fandom after... well..."

Kurt rubbed the back of his head feeling a little embarrassed.

"Things didn't go to well at the regular school they had some of us going to. He felt I was relying on the image inhibitor he gave me when I first arrive a bit too much. And he was right. It started causing problems so he thought I might do better here at Fandom."

"Ugh." TJ rolled her eyes. "Sometimes regular people can be awful. Though I don't know what the Professor expected, sending you to a regular school and expecting you not to want to look like them. I've always gone to Xavier's."

"Yeah. I think his hope was to help with the whole "humans and mutant living together and learning from each other" thing... which granted, good thing to want. I just don't think it was one The Professor's better executions."

Kurt gave a small smirk and lowered his voice as if he could be heard all the way there on the island.

"Guess even super geniuses make mistakes now and then huh?" Kurt said, giving TJ a grin and realizing that ok, this hadn't been such a bad go for the "very much not a date" round.

"Ugh." TJ rolled her eyes back. "Sometimes I think adults lose all concept of what school is like. Which is pretty impressive when you live at one."

"Ah well... in their defense, they're well, old so.... bound to happen now and then. And I think they forget that what they WANT humans to be like is not HOW they are most of the time... as far as us mutants go anyways."

Kurt was about to say something else when the signal sounded and he gave TJ a small smile. That had gone better than he had expected it to.

"Ah well, good luck with your other dates. And, see ya around sometime soon hopefully?"
