It was that time of year again! New people were here! New people to date, get to know, or perhaps make a mortal enemy of!

You never know.

Signs were hung up in front of the bar, both obviously, and easy to miss for anyone who might wander in and get signed up without their knowledge. Above the bar was a banner (in glitter):

TONIGHT!
THREE MINUTE DATES!
GOOD LUCK WBRURBODY

Your hostess wasn't gonna question it. And a few minutes before 8:00, she took the stage.

"Hello, everyone! And welcome to Three Minute Dates!" Kitty greeted them. "If you're new to this, the rules are simple. We call your name along with one other person. You talk to this person, get to know their likes, their loves, their dreams. After three minutes, a buzzer will sound-" Pause for the sound. "-and you'll hear your name paired with a different person. Et cetera. If there is anyone you'd like to talk to more, the bar will be open afterwards for drinks and conversation. Remember that any violence will get you transported into the pond, but also please don't attempt violence in order to flee, that is rude to the rest of your dates. Now I'm going to get off the stage. Have fun, and good luck..."

She trailed off, not going to attempt to pronounce the word on that sign.

"I know you," Allie greeted him with a smile.

"And I know you, too!" Gray agreed. "Before we go any further you should know I'm gay, so this is a friend date. I hope that's okay."

"Totally cool," she told him. "I'm coming off a... maybe thing myself. It just seemed like a good way to find people. Meet anyone interesting?"

"Well, I already knew everybody except the girl I met in the second round," Gray admitted. "Graham's my roommate and Libby's my big sibling. But it's nice to get out and get to talk to people! And I've stayed awake the whole time!" All twelve minutes so far.

"So how's the island been treating you?"

"Good, so far. It's less chaotic than my last place." To say the least. "Okay, can I ask about the sleeping thing?"

She wouldn't have, but he brought it up.

"Oh, I'm cursed," Gray explained. "It makes me sleep a lot. I can't control it. Just think of it as like one of those sleep disorders, only magic." He smiled sheepishly. "Welcome to Fandom? Although if it's less chaotic than your old place, your old place must have been really a lot." Yikes.

"Huh. All right." She'd really figured maybe narcolepsy, but she supposed at this point she could roll with a curse. "Back home we came back from a field trip and everyone but my class was gone. Ever read ~~the meta for~~ Lord of the Flies?"

'Magic narcolepsy' was probably the best way to think about it, really. "No," Gray said, "but I know the gist. I'm sorry, that must have been rough. Do you know what happened to everybody else or were they just 'poof' gone?"

"Our leading theory is that we were in a parallel universe somehow," Allie said. "A totally normal problem to have."

"You've definitely come to the right place for parallel universes?" Gray tried. "It sort of is a normal problem here, I guess. I don't know if that's any help. I'm sorry. Oh, no, we're running out of time." Boo.

"It'll come up again," Allie assured him as the buzzer sounded. "It's like the most interesting thing about me."

It was not, Allie, you got arrested because people called you a dictator.
