Valentine's Dance; Town Hall; Friday Evening [8 pm - 10 pm]

Arrivals to town hall would notice that the Student Council took a darker approach to the decorations this year. The colors of the streamers, balloons and table cloths were in shades of dark red and black. Instead of cut outs of hearts and pictures of cupid, there were broken mirrors hanging on the walls, open umbrellas scattered about the room, fake cobwebs on the wall and glittery cut outs of the number "13" hung everywhere.

You even had to walk under a huge ladder in order to get into the dance.

Sure, they were tempting fate by having a Friday the 13th themed dance but this was Fandom. What's the worst that could happen?

[Wait for the OCD or so help me...I'll hurt you is here! Up early because Natalie said so and to get the most out of play. Second part to go up later on tonight (tomorrow?) to save browsers and to spike punch]

Liir wasn't good at noticing many things, but he did usually notice nervousness. Like knows like, after all.

"First one?" he asked quietly as he shifted over towards her. Sometimes meeting someone even more awkward than you could make you feel more confident. Liir, on the other hand, was confident he could be more awkward than just about anyone.

"No, of course no--well, yeah," she admitted. "I mean, it's my first dance here, not my first dance ever, hi, I'm not that tragic." That probably came off as trying too hard. How about, "Hi, I'm Jill."

"It was for me, last year," he offered at first before holding out a hand.

"Liir. A pleasure to meet you."

Jill took his hand. "Nice to meet you--Lear?" Close. "Is that like a family name?"

"Liir," and the vowel sound was just a touch softer, the 'r' curled around the whole of it almost protectively.

"And I haven't the first idea what it could be. Generally, it's something to catch my attention."

He gave her a smile and was almost proud of how neatly he'd avoided dealing with his unique family situation.

"New? I don't think I recall seeing you at one of these things before and we usually have one or so a semester."

"Yeah, I just started in January," Jill said. "I'm trying to be more...social."

"If you have any success, do feel free to share the secret. I've been trying for a couple of years."

He gave her a smile.

"Enjoying things so far?"

"I'm...adjusting," Jill hedged. "It's nothing like my old school."

"Where were you before?" he asked, curious though hoping he wasn't prying. He wasn't quite sure where the line between 'polite conversation that didn't revolve just around him' and 'nosy' was drawn.

"Massachusetts?" Jill said. "Little town called Winterhead. Where are you from?"

"The Land of Oz," he offered in return, "specifically Kiamo Ko in the Vinkus, just up a ways from Red Windmill. Recently of the Emerald City.

"Where's Massachusetts in relation to New York? Or, er, Kansas?"

Australia had such weird town names. "Much closer to New York than Kansas."

"Yeah, probably just pretty much Oz, huh? Americans can be the same way," Jill told him.

"Well, yes. Oz is a bit isolated."

A moment before--

"You don't think I'm from Australia, do you?"

He shook his head.

"Entirely different Oz."

Which looks remarkably the same if you take a look at a map.

He gave a deep sigh.

"Believe as you like, I know where I'm from. It's one of the very few things I'm sure of at any time or place."
