Valentine's Dance; Town Hall; Friday Evening [8 pm - 10 pm]

Arrivals to town hall would notice that the Student Council took a darker approach to the decorations this year. The colors of the streamers, balloons and table cloths were in shades of dark red and black. Instead of cut outs of hearts and pictures of cupid, there were broken mirrors hanging on the walls, open umbrellas scattered about the room, fake cobwebs on the wall and glittery cut outs of the number "13" hung everywhere.

You even had to walk under a huge ladder in order to get into the dance.

Sure, they were tempting fate by having a Friday the 13th themed dance but this was Fandom. What's the worst that could happen?

"Soooo true. But I'm glad the mercy extended to getting you here, with Francine, in an outfit that doesn't scream 'my boss thinks he's funny.'" Dinah grinned, then wondered, "Has he been nice to her? I'll smack him if he's mean."

"I don't think they've spoken," Merlin said, sincerely hoping it would stay that way.

"Good," Dinah said, in complete agreement. "Why spoil a great dance? Hey, do they have dances like this in Albion? Music, and mostly dancing, and nothing else?"

"Not... exactly. We have feasts. And festivals," Merlin replied. "But nothing just to dance."

"There's clubs, in the city, where it's just drinks and music every weekend," Dinah said with a grin. "Of course, most of those are over-21 bars. But you can always find fake ID somewhere to get in." She blinked. "Um. Did that make any sense?"

"Clubs?" Merlin was going to assume she meant something else there. "Bars?"

Dinah facepalmed, realizing she'd lost him earlier than she'd expected. "Taverns? Okay, not taverns, exactly. They're dance places. Where they serve alcohol. And there's a legal drinking age in this country of 21." She grinned. "You need a little card that says your birthday was 21 years earlier before they can serve it to you. Trippy, hunh?"

"Why would you need to have an age for drinking alcohol?" Sure, they had decent enough water and probably could just drink that, but... why?

"Because... partly because it can get you drunk, and they want to make sure kids don't do that. Partly, mostly, because younger people drinking means younger people drinking and driving cars, and more people dying when they're that stupid," Dinah said. "Me, I think it should be 18 or so, but that's the law."

"Because of cars, you have to wait to drink?"

He wasn't going to mention this to Arthur. Ever.

"Because people get into 200 tons of steel while their judgment and reflexes are impaired, and then aim it at other people at sixty mile per hour speeds, sometimes," Dinah said, making a face. "And younger drivers have worse records for doing stupid crap like that. And dying. And getting other people killed." She paused. "Wow, I'm depressing, hunh?"

Merlin just stared as half of the words made sense in any context. "No! No. It's just... different. I suppose."

"Anyway. I meant-- if you can sneak in, you can go to places like this dance every weekend. You just have to know how." She grinned. "But that means going off the island." Dinah blinked. "Do you think you guys could go off the island at all? Or do you think you just can't get back to Albion?"

Merlin frowned for a moment, thinking that over. "We never tried that."

"Hunh." She looked thoughtful, and said, "A whole ton of us came in on the bus from Baltimore, that first day. Maybe you can go to Baltimore? I know it's not home, but... some people might not get so stir crazy, if they can leave. Even for a little while."

"Maybe," He granted her, not sure how well the idea would go with Arthur. "I'll try it on my own first, I think."

"Good plan!" Dinah cheered. "Some weekend when we have time, you and me and Tony and other people. Show you the 21st Century in all its non-magic craziness."

"Like a car?" He had yet to actually see one.

"Yes! And streetlights and buses and everything else." She grinned, thoroughly liking this idea. "We should get you cheeseburgers too. Have you had one yet?"

"I've had cheese," Merlin replied, hoping it was similar.

"Beef and cheese and maybe bacon? And cooked this time!" Dinah promised, laughing. "We'll do that even if we can't get you off the island."

"No more raw food," Merlin said, pointing a finger at her and grinning. "I look forward to trying it, though."
