Valentine's Dance; Town Hall; Friday Evening [8 pm - 10 pm]

Arrivals to town hall would notice that the Student Council took a darker approach to the decorations this year. The colors of the streamers, balloons and table cloths were in shades of dark red and black. Instead of cut outs of hearts and pictures of cupid, there were broken mirrors hanging on the walls, open umbrellas scattered about the room, fake cobwebs on the wall and glittery cut outs of the number "13" hung everywhere.

You even had to walk under a huge ladder in order to get into the dance.

Sure, they were tempting fate by having a Friday the 13th themed dance but this was Fandom. What's the worst that could happen?

Merlin had to agree with that. "Perhaps I could loan you a scarf and we'll come up with one for the nightclothes later?"

"I have a lot of scarves!" Francine said quickly, in a failed attempt to avoid coming up with the only date-related thing she could think of that people did in nightclothes and ANYWAY "My mom is a scarfmaking machine!"

Merlin hadn't even thought of that. Poor, Francine.

"She is?"

"Oh, God yes. You met my closet, remember?" Francine had a thought, which she treated carefully in case it got scared and decided to flee. "Um, not literally a machine. Just somebody who knits a lot."

"I think all mothers are a bit like that. You should meet my mum," Merlin replied. "She'd probably keep trying to feed you."

Francine looked slightly alarmed. "If they ever met each other, we'd explode!"

Merlin laughed, nodding in agreement. "Though we can always hope they cancel each other out."

Francine was overall a glass-half-full sort of person, when she wasn't worrying about whether she was going to spill it, but even she couldn't manage to be optimistic about that possibility. "I think the best we could hope for would be they get too busy telling each other embarrassing childhood stories about us to remember we were there."

Merlin's eyes went wide and frightened at that thought. "We could run away during it and pretend not to have heard about other's embarrassments."

"Or we could agree beforehand that our mothers are crazy people and nothing they say ever happened," she suggested. "Nice crazy people, the kind that aren't a danger to self or others and don't think their dogs are the reincarnation of their kidnapped by aliens husbands."

...Not that Francine spoke from familial-but-nonmaternal experience.

Merlin stared for a moment, unsure what to say to that. "...of course."

That not knowing when to shut up thing ran in the family too. She flailed her free hand. "My Aunt Libby is. Uh. Special."

"Do you have a large family?" Merlin asked, not going to say much about the... special.

"Aunts and uncles, sure. But at home there's just Mom and Dad and my brother. Except Benjamin's in college now, so he's not really at home."

"A brother?" Merlin grinned. "That must be nice."

Said the only child.

"Sometimes," Francine allowed. "When he's actually around, and not busy drooling over the weird girlfriend of the month."

"I never had any siblings," Merlin said, rubbing the back of his head. "I always wanted one, though."

"Aww," she said sympathetically. "Were you lonely?"

Merlin shrugged, shaking his head. "I always had mum around. And a few friends in my village. But it always seemed like fun. Being a big brother, you know?"

Francine smiled; that way of looking at it hadn't occurred to her. "I think you'd make a good big brother." She grinned. "You get a lot of practice taking care of Arthur, after all."

Merlin smiled and bumped her with his shoulder gently. "So. My lady. Did you want to dance?"

"It'd be a shame to bring these shoes all the way out here and not try to break my ankles or step on your feet even once," she answered, wishing there wasn't an 80% chance she wasn't joking.

Merlin laughed anyway. "I'll make certain to be careful."

"Did you take out feet insurance?" she asked, Very Seriously.

"I think I will take the risk."
