Valentine's Dance; Town Hall; Friday Evening [8 pm - 10 pm]

Arrivals to town hall would notice that the Student Council took a darker approach to the decorations this year. The colors of the streamers, balloons and table cloths were in shades of dark red and black. Instead of cut outs of hearts and pictures of cupid, there were broken mirrors hanging on the walls, open umbrellas scattered about the room, fake cobwebs on the wall and glittery cut outs of the number "13" hung everywhere.

You even had to walk under a huge ladder in order to get into the dance.

Sure, they were tempting fate by having a Friday the 13th themed dance but this was Fandom. What's the worst that could happen?

"That's the most obvious lie you've ever told," Ender said, evenly.

Ben smiled, not at all sorry about being called on it. "I don't do silly often," he amended.

"Better," Ender said, his tone a little teasing.

"Almost as often as you do," Ben decided.

"I have an excuse," Ender said, mimicing Ben's earlier lofty tone. "Val wouldn't stop bugging me if I didn't."

"Can't have that," Ben agreed. "And Tahiri makes me smile."

For whatever reason, it felt kind of strange to bring her up with Ender.

The very fact of Tahiri was something odd to Ender, who saw his own soldiers in Ben sometimes; so he categorized that away and ignored it. "If only they'd leave us alone," he said, "We'd be a lot less silly."

"Sitting around talking tactics all day," Ben said. "Probably get bored to death of each other."

"I'm bored of you right now," Ender said, straightfaced.

Something a little like uncertainty flickered in Ben's eyes. "Uh huh."

It was a really weird moment to make Ender think of Alai; he did anyway.

"You don't," he said. It wasn't an apology.

"I knew that," Ben said immediately.

He hadn't.

"Sure," Ender said, shooting him a little look.

He was stuck in some memories again, but he shoved them aside as well as he could.

Ben wasn't Ender's mother. He didn't need to check constantly to make sure Ender was all right, even if the direction of Ender's emotions seemed to have sent him somewhere he didn't want to be.

"So...admit it," he said. "You're secretly a huge fan of big parties and loud music."

And Ender appreciated it.

"Actually," he said, "I hate them. But for StuCo, I'll keep my stiff upper lip."

"Jedi get invited to a lot of these things," Ben admitted.

Not that he'd been to terribly many.

"Well, when there isn't a war on, anyway."

"Add that to my long list of reasons I'm glad I'm not a Jedi."

"You couldn't pull off the hair anyway," Ben said.

Wordlessly, Ender reached over to yank on his braid.

"Wrong kind of pulling off," Ben deadpanned.

"That lies in the eye of the beholder," Ender said, seriously, and let go. "Which is me."

Ben reached out to poke Ender in the shoulder. "I don't like you at all," he declared.

Big lie.

"So you're going to poke me to death," he summarised.

"I am," Ben declared. "Death by poking being a rightfully feared way to go in my galaxy."

"You like me," Ender pointed out, with a wry little smile. He never did like playing fair about anything, let alone lies. "I'm not sure you'd want to risk that."
