Parents' Weekend Meet & Greet, Town Park [Friday Afternoon]

Barney was smart and had purposefully blocked all outgoing mail from Fandom to his New York City (sorry, no luck for you, Robin) and so could blissfully oversee the gathering of guests, students, teachers, and townies happening in the park. The day was bright and sunny, regardless of what any weather reports might claim.

The Student Council had done a nice job getting things together to greet the visitors. A wide variety of sumptuous food was spread out on long tables at one end of the park. In the center were plenty of comfortable blue and gold tables and chairs perfect for sitting, chatting, and eating. To the other end of he park was the registration table where visitors could sign in and pickup their name tags.

Just above the registration area was a gaudy banner announcing the start of a calm and relaxing weekend. Okay, a weekend where Barney got a lot of popcorn to listen to radio.

Fraser knew that he had no guests coming so he'd taken residence near the security table early, in full uniform and looking chipper and alert.

"Yes, ma'am," he said, smiling politely. "Constable Benton Fraser of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police."

It took a better woman than Naomi Priestly to not make the natural observation that followed such a statement.

"You're in Maryland."

"Yes, I know," he said and smiled again. "Previously, I worked in Chicago as a liaison between the Chicago police department and the Canadian consulate. That's what I'm doing here as well."

Mrs. Priestly had to smile at that. Such a nice young man, this one. An excellent role model for the students.

"Well, you're just working your way further south, aren't you!"

"It does seem like that, doesn't it?" he asked, laughing. "Welcome to the island. I hope your trip was a good one."

Alice thought checking with security was her first priority.

"Are you the head, here?" she asked.

It was pretty obvious she was armed.

"Alice," she said. "I'm just wanting to make sure you're all trained and prepared for any sort of attack."

"A pleasure," he said, inclining his head again, "and yes, we are, I assure you. Despite the quaint look of the island, it's remarkably strong and durable."

"Good," Alice said, smiling. "Pays to be vigilant. Never know when something could go wrong."

And she placed her hands up. "Those aren't veiled threats, by the way. K and I just come from... unfriendlier times."

A security table? Angeal had a seriously huge (http://frikibcs.org/wp-content/uploads/2009/07/angeal_hewley.jpg) sword strapped onto his back.

He raised an eyebrow at the security-table guy, as if daring him to say something about it.

"Do you think there'll be a need for security at this picnic?"

Maybe the island was under threat.

Fraser didn't say anything about it but he certainly did glance at it. "No, I don't but isn't it always better be prepared? We're expecting a large crowd today."

"I agree," Angeal said. "Angeal, SOLDIER First Class. If there's a disturbance, I can help."

Even for large values of 'disturbance.'

"Hide, my dad's here," Robin barked out, skittering towards him and looking alarmed.

If there was one person on the island who needed to meet Juliet and hadn't, Rory had found him. "Hi, Constable Fraser," she said, bouncing the baby on her hip.

"I don't think I have," Fraser said, turning his eyes to the small baby. "Hello there."

"This is Juliet," she said, lifting the baby up just a little bit.

Juliet didn't say hi back, exactly, but she did babble and flail a fist.
