April Fools' Dance, An Abandoned Warehouse, Friday Night

The first arrivals to the warehouse would have found nothing - until the lights went on, dropping many shades of glitter down onto the floor. The glitter would stick around all night, almost-but-not-quite clashing with the colorful decor, though it did not seem to incite any boykissy.

Even if one of the janitors definitely took a shot at using it as an excuse.

There was a karaoke booth set up in the corner, and the rest of the party environment looked chaotic and incredibly merry. Reds, blues, and yellows had been thrown together like a crazy man had attacked the place with some paint.

Castiel glanced around the hall once more. "This is a dance," he said. "I thought perhaps it was a pocket dimension created for visual torment."

Or to "loosen him up". Balthazar loved to talk about "loosening him up".

He'd get around to actually greeting Chuck in a moment.

It was actually a relief to hear Cass talk like that. He kind of missed it. "That assessment isn't far off considering the awful decor but, no, it's a dance for alumni."

"Ah." Castiel frowned. "I haven't graduated from anything."

Castiel had missed Chuck. He explained things.

"I think you lived here long enough that you count as some sort of Fandom alumni," Chuck decided. "I mean, you dealt with as much weird island stuff as the rest of us. You're like an honorary graduate."

"Ah." Castiel pictured telling anyone back home that he was an honorary graduate from high school.

Well, it'd probably serve as a distraction, at least. Fandom was good for those, even if some of the angels were siding with Raphael simply because they thought Castiel had gone completely insane.

"It's good to see you, Chuck. You've been well?"

"As well as can be expected." There was always some sort of drama on the Upper East Side. "I mean, I haven't gotten into major trouble in at least three months. That's pretty good, right?"

"Better than most humans I know." The Dean of his universe had made it an entire year, but that was after years and years and years of trouble. Castiel figured it balanced out.

"How have you been?" Chuck asked. "Anything new in Heaven?"

It was so weird to be asking someone that.

Oh, what a question.

"Michael has been locked into the cage in Hell with Lucifer, leaving a power vacuum. I've attempted to fill it, but it's caused some . . . resentment. Mostly in Raphael. And his followers."

Resentment. Yeah. That was definitely the way to describe a civil war.

Chuck could actually follow that, if he thought of Heaven as a business rather than stuff he saw in movies. He couldn't help but look a little impressed that Cass was running things there.

"So how are Raphael and his friends showing their resentment?" Chuck asked. "I'm guessing they're not just writing angry letters."

"No, Raphael prefers rather more aggressive methods than that."

Mostly killing people. He was very vengeful, that way.

"Well that's completely unsurprising," Chuck said flatly. "Sounds like it sucks up there, Cass."

Castiel's shoulders twitched, in something that may or may not have been a shrug. "It's home."

Chuck offered Castiel a smile, kind of understanding where he was coming from. "Well I'm glad you managed to find time to come here. I kinda missed having you around."

"I actually had no intention of coming," Castiel said. "I seem to have trouble arriving in Fandom on purpose."

"Well I'm glad you're around anyway," Chuck said. "Probably for the best you don't show up too often. The last time I came here wasn't the most pleasant experience."

Castiel frowned. He tended to think of Fandom as something of a relief -- there were no apocalypses here, for one thing -- but he knew Chuck didn't always see it the same way. "Would you like to talk about it?"

Chuck shrugged. "It's done with now. One of my former friends got a little...vampire-y and tried to kill me. Ended up breaking my nose."

"Ah, old friends." Castiel well knew the trouble with old friends. "An old friend of mine faked his death and made off with all of Heaven's weapons so he could sell them."

Chuck lifted his eyebrows. "You have an old friend?"

Yes, that's what he focused on.

"I have many friends among the angels," Castiel said, a little defensively.

Then, after a moment, "Most of them really are dead."

"Ah, sorry." Now he felt bad. "I've just never heard you talk about your friends before."

"I wasn't aware I was supposed to."

"Well you don't have to," he allowed. "It just usually comes up in conversation when you've known someone for a while. Though I guess angels might do the whole friendship thing differently than humans. You guys don't go out and get drunk together, do you?"

"I'd never actually been drunk until I first came here."
