April Fools' Dance, An Abandoned Warehouse, Friday Night

The first arrivals to the warehouse would have found nothing - until the lights went on, dropping many shades of glitter down onto the floor. The glitter would stick around all night, almost-but-not-quite clashing with the colorful decor, though it did not seem to incite any boykissy.

Even if one of the janitors definitely took a shot at using it as an excuse.

There was a karaoke booth set up in the corner, and the rest of the party environment looked chaotic and incredibly merry. Reds, blues, and yellows had been thrown together like a crazy man had attacked the place with some paint.

Really, Reno doubted that they'd need the hint.

He was wearing his usual, which made for an interesting contrast with the orange and yellow leopard-and-flower-print dress of the lady on his arm. But it wasn't like Reno cared, either way. She kinda fit in, at this function.

"If they ain't here, we can always hop a portal to Tokyo to drag 'em here," he mused, looking around.

"Why are we having a get-together on April Fool's Day, anyway?" Rikku asked, frowning. "I don't think I get this holiday. I thought you were supposed to pull tricks on people."

"Really? And here I thought it was about givin' out fruit baskets to dumbfucks..."

Thank you, Biff, for the stellar education in Earth holidays that Reno had received.

"Either way, can't complain too much if it gets people to come around, right?"

"Maybe the fruit baskets are part of the trick," she suggested. "Or maybe you tell people you're giving them baskets, and then you don't, and that's the trick."

Rikku logic at its finest.

"We should do something this weekend," she decided. "I mean, we-as-in-the-whole-posse. Even if it's just playing pool and drinking beer."

"Sounds like a plan," Reno agreed, grinning as he mulled that over. "I'm gonna have to spring that one on Romeo when I run into him, yo."

It was totally a when. He'd stalk the guy around the dance, if Romeo didn't find him first.

"Awesome," Rikku nodded, with a bounce. "I wonder if Luke's gonna make it? Or Dawn. It's kinda sad, you know? We come here, and we all bond, and then we graduate and flee back home to our own universes, and ... it's so hard to keep in touch, you know?"

"It is," Reno agreed, sighing a little. "Like people don't have enough trouble keepin' up with everyone when they're on the same planet. We got whole different realities to figure out, yo."

Okay, so Portalocity and the Fandom mail service helped with that, somewhat. Still.

"I guess it's better than the alternative," she chirped. "I mean, making friends, and then working to stay in touch with them ... that's better than never coming here or meeting them at all, you know?"

Better to have loved and lost, that kind of thing.

"Yeah, I sure can't bitch about that, yo."

What would he have, if he hadn't come here?

... Well, odds were that he'd still be buried under an overpass, for a start. Right?

"Besides, some people are just worth that extra effort, zoto."

"Lots of people are," she nodded. "Once you give them a chance to surprise you. I think I'm getting sad about graduation again. People leave, and new people come in, and it should balance, but it's just ... hard, you know?"

"Tell me about it," Reno sighed. "I thought it'd be easier now that we ain't students with 'em, but this is just as bad, yo. I'm watchin' Rookies move on out there, and how likely are any of them to keep in touch with a teacher after grad, huh?"

"You could threaten them," Rikku decided. "Tell them their final grade depends on monthly status reports. Which ... doesn't help if they get their grades and then disappear."

She sighed. "Being here makes time all weird."

"Yeah. Remember when a year was just a year?"

Not so much, in Fandom. Even if a year was just a year here, people would go away for ages and not change a bit, or leave for a week and come back decades older. It was disorienting, at best. And it didn't help that part of him still wanted to be a student, instead of the teacher he'd become.

"You feel all weird bein' at the front of that classroom, too?"

"I feel like an impostor," Rikku said, nodding emphatically. "Any minute now, the real teacher is going to show up and boot me out. I mean, how am I allowed to teach? What the heck do I know, anyway!?"

"Science?" Reno let himself slip right back into his comfortable little smirk again, shrugging and sliding an arm around her waist. "You know plenty, yo. Maybe didn't learn it by goin' to college or whatever, but life experience is more important, if you ask me."

She was going to cuddle in close. Hopefully he didn't mind. He usually didn't, but there usually wasn't such potential for permanent eye damage if he looked directly at her outfit.

"I do research every week before class," she said. "I'm hoping that I'm ont getting any of it wrong. I mean, what if I do?"

Confuse acids and bases, and then mess the kids up. That'd be awesome.

"What did you teach last time?" she asked. "Something about the end of the world, right?"

If Reno had life experience in anything ...

"Yeah," Reno replied, keeping his eyes pointedly directed at hers, today. He liked being able to see. "That was last summer, yo. I did a tactics class, too. And one about bein' a Rookie."

Which was kind of amusing, on its own. A class on how to be a student, essentially.

"See, those are all helpful," she said. "I bet we're awesome teachers and we don't even know it. And we're giving them real-world experience and ... okay, besides, even if we were horrible, this place has had worse teachers. You know?"

Reno couldn't help but bark out a laugh at that one.

"Fair enough, though you won't catch me namin' names," he replied. And then paused, and leaned forward a little, and smirked. "Like who?"

Reno could never turn down the opportunity for gossip, no.

Rikku was giggling. "There was a guy who said he was a god," she said. "And this other guy who went on and on about how weapons were horrible and wanted us to build things that weren't at all weapons? Sokka made a toaster that just happened to have a flamethrower in it."

"Oh, Boom," Reno snorted, shaking his head. "At least there ain't no question about the bread gettin' toasted that way, right?"

He glanced around the room again. Man, no Sokka, either.

Rikku seemed to understand that glance around the room.

"I miss him, too," she said, shaking her head. "This party-thing isn't supposed to be so depressing, is it?"

"Nah. You never really get used to fallin' outta touch, huh?"

He could take it with a grain of salt, sure. But it still sucked.
