Three Minute Dates- Caritas- Saturday before 8:15 pm

It was that time agaaaaaain! There was a sign on the door and a banner above the stage.

Or maybe, perchance, you totally missed it somehow, and didn't run from the bar before Tino could sign you up for dates. It happens!

And then a few minutes before 8:00, Kitty took the stage under the banner, to a drumroll from the zombie drummer.

"Hello and welcome to another installment of Three Minute Dates!" Kitty began. "In case you're new to this, in a couple minutes I'm going to call out sets of names. You'll find that person, talk to them for a whole three minutes. When you hear this siren-" Oh, that was an obnoxious air horn sound. "-you'll get a new person to talk to. If you got sucked into this without your knowledge, sorry, and also it's fifteen minutes of your life, make some new friends!"

That was a man's name, and this was a man, which wouldn't have been Irene's preference if these dates meant anything, but it'd mostly been an excuse to make new friends and flirt.

"I don't know you!" she announced cheerily, holding a manicured hand out in greeting. "Irene Adler, absolute pleasure to meet you. How's your night going?"

Jon shook her hand. "Jonathan Sims. A pleasure." Irene was put-together enough that he was already feeling scruffy, and fell back into his more professional persona. "Well, I've been signed up for dates without knowing it, but until now I've known them already, so it's good to meet someone new, I suppose."

And it was rather nice to hear another British accent after being surrounded by Americans.

It was wonderful to hear that accent, yes, and Irene actually caught herself cocking her head as she listened to Jonathan.

"Oh, you sound like home," she said, her smile widening a little. "And yeah, I'd wager...oh, eighty percent of these people were signed up by another party. It's all just fun though."

Jon laughed. "My teaching buddy signed me up. And yes, it's lovely to hear a familiar accent. I'm from Bournemouth, by way of London." Even if his accent was pure RP.

"Oh, and, erm. 2019, since apparently that's also a variable."

"2012," Irene shared warmly, "and native Londoner, over here. At least you know who signed you up! I think most people blame Tino." She pointed Tino out, in case Jonathan was new enough -- 'teaching buddy' was a bit of a clue -- to not know everyone's favorite scapegoat. "And Bournemouth is lovely, though it's probably been twenty years since I've visited."

More than that. God, she was old.

"I haven't been back in some time," Jon said, shrugging. "I left for Oxford, and since then only went back for my grandmother's funeral. Erm...I'm curious if you mean twenty years ago for you, or twenty years prior to 2021." He shook his head. "I'm still not entirely sure how to measure time around those sorts of things."

He didn't think Irene looked old enough to have been away that long as an adult, although he probably wasn't the best judge, seeing as he'd gotten away with telling everybody he was ten years older.

Irene was a spritely thirty-one, no matter what her self-deprecating narrative might imply.

"Twenty years for me," Irene clarified. "I'm certain we went to Bournemouth on holiday when I was a little girl but it's been ages. But I completely understand the time confusion -- I actually am recently returned to Fandom, and for me I was gone about two months, but it's apparently been closer to six years."

So yeah, she got it.

Ah, so roughly Jon's age, even though he looked (and often felt) substantially older.

"That sounds quite confusing." Jon shook his head. "It was late 2018 in my world, and then...hm." Then the apocalypse hit. "Then there was a bit of time when time was impossible to measure, so when I say 2019, that's just the most likely possibility. Then I ended up here." For all he knew, it was 2021 back home as well.

"But you...If you've returned voluntarily, this place must have its appeal."

"It absolutely does," Irene assured him with a warm smile. "It's strange, don't get me wrong, and you're liable to turn into a marmot or something at some point, but -- I like the people."

Which was why she kept doing events like these, too.

"Everyone here's a little bit weird," she added, leaning forward as though confessing. "So, in a way, no one is."

"I've certainly met a few characters," Jon agreed. "But everyone so far has seemed...pleasant? I do have one student I think enjoys making me uneasy, but even she hasn't been overtly threatening."

It was a low bar to clear, but Jon would absolutely take it.

"I'm mostly still getting used to being around people, really," he confessed. "Other than one or two friends or for, um. For my job." So to speak. "It's...it's been a while."

"Teaching's fun," Irene said as the airhorn sounded, smiling over at him. "I enjoyed it when I did it. I'm over at Dite's, these days, if you ever want to swing by."

One thing that held true across universes was that Irene would never pass up an opportunity to make an awkward-seeming Englishman maybe get a bit more awkward by mentioning her occupation.

"Oh. Um. Okay?" Jon stood, looking a little uncomfortable but honestly more baffled. "I, um. Probably won't need anything there, but, um. I could stop by maybe, just to...to talk."
